With determination come self-expectations; Hong Kong artiste Vivian Chow born on Nov 20 admits to be such a perfectionist. Before our interview began, Vivian sat down on the couch. The mirror she placed on the tea table showed a shadow on her left nose bridge, indicating insufficient lights. This followed by 10 minutes of lighting adjustments. Vivian explained that ensuring the best image for TV audiences is a professional spirit that an artiste should have. "Every artiste should ensure that they do their best in every arena and cooperate to create the best effect," she said. As she assumes the role of Pink Revolution (Hong Kong's Breast Cancer Awareness campaign) ambassador, Vivian is careful to ensure she has the knowledge on breast cancer prevention, so that she can help the organization achieve the greatest calling. "This is my own personality. I will want to achieve 100% in everything I do but I will not pick on little errors. I am a perfectionist in a way but will only do the best to my own ability without overestimating my abilities. If I know I cannot manage something, I will not ask too much of myself. But if things are within my capabilities, I'll make sure I give the best." Audience may be anticipating her active comeback in acting and singing, but Vivian will not rush into it. "I've never said I will not act again; but I've not come across a character which really appeals to me. I've not being performing for such a long time; my mentality and expressions of emotions are now very different from the past. I think I have more the room to display my skills and experiences now; this is also the reason why I have to pick on the script more carefully. I will definitely act again when I receive an interesting project, one that I desire to act in, challenging enough and have the confidence to do it well." Vivian commented that she would like to challenge the extreme personalities but more importantly, characters which she had previously tried on are sure no-no. "I would like to try acting as a person with complex personality, a role that requires expressing the inner feelings. I'll be more interested this way," she laughed, "it doesn't matter even if the role is a villain. Anything that is challenging will attract me to 'play the game' again." Before she meets the script which she has been anticipating, Vivian said she will engage more in charity work. "I think I am at my best frame of mind and physical health for more charity work. I hope to create positive influences with my artistic appeal, build a harmonious society and take on more social responsibilities." Her high self-expectations are expressed from inside out, and both in work and private life. Hong Kong media reported on Feb 24 that Vivian is pregnant. Last year when she took on an interview with Xin.sg, she clearly stated that she has reached a consensus with her husband, then boyfriend, Joe Nieh, that they will not have children. Reason being: the "corrupted social values" in our society is absolutely unsuitable for children's grown, especially when he or she is an artistes' child. "I think there are too many undesirable messages and negative forces in this society. Is it really suitable for a child to be born under such a social environment? We thought about it and decided that it is definitely not. Since we cannot give him a healthy environment to live in, we might as well not have him. It's especially unfair for children of artistes because there will always be cameras lurking in the dark trying to capture him whenever we are on the streets. This is definitely not the kind of healthy life or growing environment for a normal child. But of course if we 'accidentally' have one, I'll definitely give birth to him or her." Tabloids reported that Nieh was bent on leaving Vivian when he was caught in the kissing scandal with a university student; until he found out she was pregnant and held their wedding in a lightning flash. The couple has clarified the news of her pregnancy to be false. "We have reached a consensus and decided not to have a child. So if you read new about me having a baby, it's most likely rumors and untrue," she insisted.
