Traveling on the Long Island Expressway, moderate traffic, cruising along ~65MPH, when I suddenly noticed from the corner of my eye something in my rearview moving too quick to ignore; the asshole must have been doing at least 110. He was still behind me in a lane to my right, but noticing a truck in his lane immediately in front of him, I automatically knew he was going to cut into my lane to pass the truck. At that time there was not enough space between the truck and me for even a motorcycle to slip in, much less the full sized car that he was driving. I slammed on the brakes, and sure as shit, the asshole zooms into view in front of me now, and side slips into my lane just narrowly missing both the truck in front of him and me to his left. At that point I immediately jammed my foot back again on the gas and at the same time, heard about three or four seconds of tire screeching behind me as I pulled away. That was about the longest three or four seconds I've ever experienced. The guy behind me probably got brake checked and if I hadn't sped back up, he likely would have rear ended me. The asshole who engineered this whole near miss quickly disappeared into the stream of traffic ahead of us, weaving in and out as he went. People really need to be put into jail for this sort of shit. After today I'm thinking about installing a dash cam; in case of some horrific accident where I'm killed by some asshole, I want evidence in my vehicle to help convict him or her. If anything, uploading the thing onto Youtube would provide plenty of evidence (license number on video) so that cops can go after people like this even without any court witnesses. Comments?
lmao @ Nas....... 65mph in the L.I.E is like going 10 mph in the BQE or the BElt to most new yorkers..... but anyways, gotta try your best not to mess with pplz like that...i guaranteed it's a young dude or a girl or it's just a typical NYker that cant drive for shit....happened many times to me before and even worse, i actually got rear ended....Luckily, it was nothing serious...
Dude...I had a similar experience last night on a major highway at around 11:30pm. Out of no where a Huge deer tried to run across 4 lanes of highway. I was going about 65-70 mph. The car in front of me on the right lane swerved to avoid the deer, at that time, I didn't know why he swerved so abruptly, I thought he was drunk or something. In seconds, I realize why he swerved and I had to do the same to avoid hitting the deer, instead of stepping on the brakes and getting rear ended, I stepped on the gas to accelerate past the deer. It was too close, in my rear view mirror i saw a few cars slammed on brakes and the deer jumped over the center divider.........I sure hope no cars coming from the opposite side hit it. I later reviewed my dash cam, and realized how close to death it could've been if I had slam on the breaks to avoid the deer. I had my whole family in my car, so I got some cold sweats after reviewing the video.
@nas ikr? bahahahahah Glad you survived dude, after my motorcycle accident, took me awhile to actually get back on, when facing life-ending moments...man...shits just happens so fast you dont even know what happened.
Glad to hear you made it out ok.... but if you see that happening again.... get closer to the truck, maintain the same speed as the truck and block him out. He will not want to rear end a truck and will slam on his brakes. If he has no finesse weaving through traffic without causing others to be in danger than he shouldn't be given more of an opportunity to do it to others ahead...
You know, the problem that I saw when I picked him up in my rear view was that he was traveling so fast that I intuitively knew that he would not be able to stop, even if he had wanted to. Had he hit that truck ahead of him, it would have been the same as him hitting a stopped truck while going 40-50 MPH. I knew that if I would have been anywhere near that truck at the moment of impact, I certainly would have gotten a significant piece of that action. That was what prompted me to react the way that I did, it was almost a knee jerk in order to avoid getting involved. I've always hated driving my entire life; not just from the chore of it (physical demands, attention span, etc) but also from the dangers of it, especially from idiots on the road. Granted, you could be sitting on a train and it could derail; my point is, that there are also a lot of individual lack of responsibility thrown into the mix. At any rate, I'm glad to have walked away from that it, but I'm nonetheless angry about such fools are even being allowed on the road. It certainly does create a danger for everyone else. As for getting a dash cam (they're apparently very popular in Korea) I'm going to explore the specifics to see if it's affordable. Personally I think that if dash cams were standard equipment on ALL cars, that would help hold a lot of irresponsible people responsible, especially with incidents like these.
I hear ya, always do what you think is the best option for yourself... but i have done the boxing out thing and they know they have to slam on their brakes.
Or, as the saying in Chinese goes, if he's "rushing to get reincarnated" then I'm certainly not about to get in his way.
You would think motorcyclists would be more cautious, considering the exposed nature of their form of transport. It's essentially 1-hit KO, yet they are the people who do some of the shittiest maneuvers on the road.
I'm glad nothing happened to you. The only way for these people to learn if they die. I never liked to wish harm upon someone, but people like this fucktard deserve to be paralysed. edit: paralysis or death might even be too light for them. Life time imprisonment wouldn't even make up for the amount of lives they put at risk.
Half the time idiots would expect you to back away so they floor it. Yeah i would want to speed up and block him out, but like in the end its not worth getting involved in it. He'll eventually learn his lesson when he makes the news by crashing in a few days
Smart driving Ralph, happened to me a few times. Installing dashcam is good, helps with insurance too. They do it in Russia to counteract insurance fraud
Gosh Jelly, your AV is, well... Swell LOL... At any rate, I amended my post because I see that the way it was originally written it was unclear; the culprit wasn't driving a motorcycle, but a full sized sedan. I'm sorry that my writing was less than clear; I guess I was so galled by the whole thing that my literary skills also got ran off the road. Thanks Dan & Evo, et al, for the kind benedictions. The ironic thing in these cases is that the idiotic usually kills a bunch of people but they themselves survive without a scratch. I'm just glad I didn't wind up on the news as a statistic. At any rate, I was also reading a lot of the YT threads about Russian insurance scams. Aside from that the way Russians drive reminds me how lucky we are to live in the US and only have the occasional asshole. They seem to have one in every other car in those videos. I've also looked at a variety of retail sources and it seems that the majority of these products are of either PRC or ROK manufacture and neither have the quality assurance that most western customers are used to. It seems that there are equal amounts of praise as well as complaints. Additionally, the systems also seem to require reformatting of the micro SD card every two weeks; some also have heat issues and other leave tip gaps in the video. I guess finding one that works the way I want is going to be a chore. <sigh>
I'm glad ur all good bro... alas... I'm with nas on this... I read "I almost creamed on the highway today..." ahem... back to the serious bit... to me, there really isn't enuff info for me to assess the situation the way I would like to... how many lanes are there, how far were the cars behind you, how far were the cars in front of you, how fast was the truck going, was there shoulder room, etc... depending on those answers, the safest approach would have been to speed up and get in front of the truck, let the fcker meet his maker... could have also sped up to be side by side with the truck giving ample time for the moron to slow his ass down, it's a box in and brake check all-in one... if you had free car space behind you and could safely get behind the truck, that's also a possibility as well... the dbag would have just passed the car that was behind you and finally seriously, if you really felt immediately that shit was gonna happen, nothing wrong with signaling out and just stopping on the shoulder... when driving, it is rarely ever the smart decision to slam the brakes if ur trying to avoid an accident... furthermore brakes in general probably will never save you in an oh shit moment, an "emergency" brake essentially is a fallacy... u pull that fcker and you pretty much lose all control of ur car unless ur a drift expert... *gets off soapbox* **yeah, basically akki and crazymofo have the right idea heh
Glad you're safe Ralph! You should really have the dashcam installed, so many shifty things can happen in the road... Also about the braking instead of accelerating, I would have done the same, I rather get hit by the guy from behind than sped up right between the trucks, just imagine the guy doesn't stop in time and hits you.... you get mangled into a truck...
Well, the situation was like this, I was in the middle lane, and traveling ~ 65MPH flow of traffic, no one was really moving faster or slower. A truck was in the lane to my right, maybe only a half a car length ahead of me; another car is to the left and maybe also a half a car length ahead of me. So in essence, the three of us basically were running in a reverse wedge formation with very little difference in speed. There is also a narrow shoulder to the far right. I have one of those wide angled rear view mirrors that sees behind and nearly everything on the right. Out of my peripheral vision, I generally know the speed of cars by how quickly they move relative to the speed of traffic around them. In other words, it was like the entire road's worth of traffic was motionless (relative to each other), and this idiot was suddenly spotted moving 40-50 MPH greater than everyone else. I sensed more than saw him to the right rear of my vehicle and in the span of two seconds he must have covered something like 8 car lengths. At that speed, I knew I needed to give him someplace to go, or else he was either going to hit that truck, or serve to avoid the truck and hit me. That's why my first reflex was to slam on the brakes. Even then, I was originally moving at 65. Hitting the brakes hard only slowed me enough so that the space between the truck and me opened up by a mere 10 more feet but it was just enough for the idiot to side slip into my lane ahead of me, avoiding both the truck and me. And yes, I understand perfectly about "emergency" brakes; they're only good for parking to prevent your car from rolling, and even then, you should leave your car in gear. In this case, I slammed on the brakes not to avoid an accident in front of me, but to avoid an accident that was coming from behind me; I purposely chose to evade it by slowing down and offering him an opening, and the daylight that he wanted, thus allowing him to pass me by. The best way that I can visualize this is like the police chases that you see on YouTube, in which fleeing cars fly past other traffic with cops in pursuit. The regular traffic appears to be barely moving. See the video below to get a sense of what I mean: Police Chase in LA (don't mind the asinine audio): Oh, and speaking about emergency brakes, they do come in handy from time to time:
lol brock ballbuster... anyways, I understand your decision in doing what you did. I'm glad you came out alright from it. I'm naturally an offensive style driver, so from what I can conclude from the info you gave me, my first instinct would have been to speed up and merge to my left or right, whichever I could do safely. My second instinct would have been, if there was a car in front, and I couldn't speed up, I'd slow down and merge to the left making sure my braking wouldn't leave ppl in a mess... if neither could be achieved, I'd get as even with the truck as possible and wall off the lane assuming i'm not tailgating the person in front of me... and tbh, the 3rd option would almost never be there for me, I hate being boxed in, I always leave myself a gtfo scenario when driving... so in my thought process, braking and not making any other movement to me is basically putting my life into someone else's hands, I'd have to be sure the crazy dbag makes the merge cleanly, the car behind to not be falling asleep and the truck would have to maintain his speed... cuz if the truck had slown down, u'd be in the same situation, only with no other choices to make...
While I understand perfectly what you're saying, in my situation, I intuitively knew that I didn't have the speed up option; judging by his speed of approach, I knew he was going to be on me in about two or three seconds (which in fact, he was). Already driving at 65, even had I floored it, my little 4 cyclinder Hyundai would have likely taken an additional few seconds to close that gap. In other words, I don't have a whole lot of sprint speed reserve in that little car, already carrying my fat assed self, the missus and little missy. Thus, I didn't have many options in speeding up; the only proactive thing that I could have done in the time span alloted was to slow down and give way to avoid the impact. But, I'm just glad that nobody got hurt because of the idiot's craziness. Maybe what I need to do is look into a 57 Chevy or other built like a tank muscle car, LOL...
