Andy Lau Slams Hollywood

Discussion in 'Chinese Entertainment' started by hadouken, Mar 18, 2006.

  1. Hong Kong superstar ANDY LAU is refusing to move to Hollywood because he believes the big movie studios aren't interested in the Chinese film industry.
Lau, who stars in hit Cantonese crime thriller INFERNAL AFFAIRS, disapproves of the stereotypical characters who can only master kung fu that his countrymen usually portray.
The 42-year-old says he's been approached with Hollywood scripts, but "nothing has moved me yet".
While Infernal Affairs has won accolades in Asia and Europe and has so far spawned two sequels, it hasn't been released in America - but Hollywood studio WARNER BROS has bought the rights to remake the film.
But Lau admits he doubts Tinseltown will ever truly warm to Chinese performers.
He says, "Not in my generation. Look at how long it took for blacks."

I think Andy made the right decision not to become a part of Hollywood.

Take Jackie Chan for instance. I loved his earlier movies; the man was on his way to becoming a legend when he decided to go to Hollywood & as a result now resembles a caricature. Same goes for Jet Li. His Chinese movies were so much better than his Hollywood ones...

Why do you think Hollywood is re-making so many Asian films as of late?

  4. maybe because he's treated like a god in china... in hollywood he'll be a no one... -lol jk i dunno but they are remaking inferno afffairs i believe with hollywood actors, hollywood has bought the script.

  5. its being filmed right now i believe

Yes. Andy made the right choice by refusing to go to Hollywood. Although I would like to see more Hong Kong stars get mainstreamed into American pop culture - music and film - I don't think it is the right time. I think once Americans learn to stop stereotyping Chinese, then the time will come.

  7. yea i agree and does he even have the abilities to make it into hollywood... It's gonna be interesting seein a remake of inferno affairs... lets hope they pull it off.

I agree that andy shouldn't go to hollywood, they would just treat him as a "kung fu" specialist.

Except right now, there's still tons of cash he can still make. Besides, I actually I find his acting and choice of roles to be much better than when we was younger.

I also agree with others who said Andy was right in turning down Hollywood. Hollywood would just make him look like a fool, though he would make a pretty penny.

Errrr...does Andy Lau EVEN speak English? I mean, his bullshit means squat if he can't speak English fluently. How does he expect to be given a decent role if he can't speak the language. Also, he needs to find small juicy roles like Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li did to enter the Hollywood market. Not everyone can STAR in a movie!?!?!

    He's just lame!

grats andy! good decision.. if he went to hollywood to act.. we won't see him in such movies like infernal affairs. hollywood will prolly ask him to act in some mystery thriller stuffs wid conspiracies scandals etc.. Hollywood is juz jealous and unwilling to lose to we asians..they want to remain the perception in everyone that Hollywood films are the bestest!that's why they bought alot of scripts from koreans, chinese etc.. like Il mare filmed into Lake house (this one is ok bcoz i love seein keanu wid sandra), etc etc etc.. Well, andy could act in hollywood as well as in hongkong..why not? oh i think one fella who makes it there is my fav CHOW YUN FATT..godlike actor..hahaha!i can't wait to see him in pirates of carb.3!!!

Retire??? Are u out of your Fucking mind??? Why dont you tell George Clooney, Bradd Pitt, Tom Cruise and Nicholas Cage to retire also because these guys are also in their mid 40's. All these actors including Andy has many more years left. Andy has all the good roles because the guy worked his ass off in the industry and improved throughout the years and now you want him to retire??? The guy is still making the big bucks so he cant stop now. There are so many actors who havent paid their dues yet but they are getting big time recoginition for nothing and thats a damn shame. Andy has every right to slam on Hollywood and if you have any ounce of Asian blood in you, you should understand why. Tony Leung and Andy Lau are like the Tom Crusie and George Clooney of HK, but they still havent gotten the recognition they deserve in Hollywood because of certain racial stereotypes. Andy should retire when he feels like it and not because some one tells him to.

Im sure Andy speaks English because most HK actors actually can speak English. Whats the difference between Andy and Chow Yun Fat??? Not much, but why does Chow Yun Fat get the starring role, whereas Andy does not?? If Chow Yun Fat got a starring role so should Andy. Andy is a big star in HK and he should not settle for just small roles in a Hollywood movie. He has every right to bitch. And how the fuck is it lame for some one to stand up for the Chinese/Asian community against Hollywood's stereotyping??? You are probably that one guy who watched Romeo Must die, The One and Bullet Proof Monk thousands of times because you just love how Hollywood uses HK actors in their movies. Face it Hollywood put our Chinese actors in the dumbest movies. Plus Andy never said he wanted a starring role, he just want the right role that shows Asians in a appropriate and realistic light. Ever heard of the Yellow Peril, Fu Man Chu, The Asian dragon lady and Charlie Chan?? Well these are Asian stereotypes that still somehow exist this very day. Dont diss a guy who is voicing his opinion. What is lame is your ignorance.

Andy Lau made the right choice. ALOT of HK movies that are available in blockbusters have SH*TTY lame titles to them, and are not the original titles.

Some of you here are slamming Andy for his decision not to enter hollywood. Ignorant and foolish. Hollywood is RACIST to begin with, and you swear they are going to treat Asians the same as the whiteys. For crying out loud, they still treat Asian women as exotic creatures.
