One of the things that I find really aggravating about technology and travel is that there are plenty of safer ways to do it, but that it would simply cost more. In this latest "accident" people died as a ferry went down. What I don't understand is why don't they manufacture ferries that break apart into little sections of self sustainable boats? That is, passengers just remain in their seats as the hull separates into individual self sealed sections? No more running around looking for an exit, life rafts, etc.

The captain would order abandon ship, and presses a button which ejects sealed passenger pods into the sea. They actually do this in science fiction movies so why not in real life. If you can think it, then it is simply an engineering problem. So we should solve the problem.
