Any folks w/ US citizenship (born/raised) ever think about venturing into these cities as a place to live?

Please share your ideas, and if you live in these cities, please discuss.

In my situation, I want to try one of these cities as the job opportunities seem to be a lot more compared to the US. I know language is a big issue though. What are your folk's thoughts? Would learning reading/writing in mandarin be more beneficial than actually obtaining a degree of study?

    Thanks.

LOL, I can barely afford to live in New York; HK, Singapore and Shanghai are way outta my league, unless you're talking about some hovel with ceiling dripping overhead or vermin beneath your feet.

the only problem living there is humidity and hot weather, and you have to bare the crowd on the streets, transportation, etc. expenses shouldn't be a problem...just finding a place to live..if u really consider getting a job there then yes, Mandarin is so important, if ure already got a degree in the US i guess just learn the language to perfect it

I've heard some friends have gone to Shanghai to teach English. They've mentioned the job opportunities for fluent english speakers and some are still there after 2 years. I'm not sure how the visa works; but, they are enjoying their time there.

I would enjoy visiting those places and maybe stay for a couple of months; maybe 4 at the most. But, I would tire of the crowds and humid weather. Plus miss my family and friends.

I live in Chicago and im planning on moving to Hong Kong after college but the only thing im really concerned about is being away from everyone and finding a job. I love the life style over there and enjoy the fast pace life but i can only speak Cantonese and cant read Chinese which would be another issue.

Yeah once you go and live in those cities, your country will never be the same again.

I swear people in Australia move 1/2 the speed

As Hong Kong used to be governed by England, some of the people speak English and most of the signs have an English name. As long as you enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle there, you'll do fine. You should do some job hunting now prior to going there. Good Luck. =)

I would love to have the opportunity to work in any of those cities. It would be great experience, only problem, I'm not too fluent in Cantonese and especially Mandarin. But I can still learn.

Parents? Well I think they'd prefer me working close to home, or at least in Canada. But hey, if the job is good, regardless, I'd want to move there. Same thing happened with my brother. He now lives in another country. When it comes to a job, I'd like to think my parents would set aside how overprotective they are of me, and support my decision to work overseas.

You will do fine with English in Singapore since its the primary language over here.

How are the jobs and what not?

Singapore is interesting, but moving over to start over is something difficult. Hows cost of living and pay?

    You got some pics?

those cities are pretty crowded. I prefer to stay at where I am now or move to some other cities that are less populated and still have a good standard of living condition. Currently xiamen is my best choice............

i rather stay in asia anyday over america or european countries. but thats just me.

night life and most importantly food is better.

  20. I know for sure that knowing the language in the countries will take time, but it will be a lot more easy if you live there and have to learn it the hard way, since you are forced to use it every day over there.
I am thinking to go to HK for Internship, it will be a lot harder because the expectations over there is higher then in Europe.
But I think it's a good way to see if HK is the country where i really want to make carreer in
