Anyone Prepping For The US East Coast Storm?

I remember last year we prepped for Hurricane Irene and luckily, it turned out to be a big nothing for us. We still have a lot of the emergency supplies (extra bottled water that hasn't yet expired, butane for gas cooking if need be, extra medications, canned goods, batteries, et cetera); so we're going to pick up some extra produce just in case. Also, will get some extra cash from the bank just to have it on hand in case electronics go out and all purchasing would have to be the ole greenback. At the time of this posting the projected landfall is Southern New Jersey, but authorities fear that there will be a significant storm surge to the surrounding areas. Reportedly, this 900 mile wide hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm, but may extraordinarily intensify again to hurricane level as it meets and then combines with a winter storm traveling from the midwest; a high pressure system to the north (at Greenland) will keep Sandy blocked and allow it to linger in the east coast. It will then dump tons of rain and cause water surges.

Anyone else in the affected zone?

Where all the russian mobs at...

I played in the rainy storm before and it was really fun. Less football more just playing in the rain/wind and dirt but not this weekend, we will be playing next week if nobody cancel again.

All the food stores were packed, people were buying everything. Mom's like we need to get more of those gas cans. Afraid we'll be out of electricity. Guess we'll be doing hot pot as well.

Looks like there will be a lot of rain and windy areas, I just hope we don't lose electricity and internet. Cause i might just be force to go out in the storm to find something to do...Singing in the rain..maybe >.>

Went shopping today; we first drove to BJ's (Flushing's Skyview Center) and couldn't even get into the parking lot. The line of cars outside trying to get in were literally snaking around the block. Abandoned that idea and went to BJ's (Whitestone) instead. Got into the store pretty easy but saw that the checkout lines were about three times what they normally would be on a Saturday. At any rate, got a few more cases of bottled water, fresh produce, and a some more dry goods. Stayed away from the frozen (electricity dependent) products. I suspect that lines would be even worse tomorrow as Sandy gets closer. Just to be on the safe side I'm keeping my kids home from school both Monday and Tuesday; doubt they would be opened anyways. Because of the dual storm fronts, I suspect that this may have more water flooding than Irene. My car's parking is in an underground garage. I hope I still have a set of wheels left after this. Emptied my car of everything removable in case the worst happens. Recharging everything that is rechargeable. Go kit documents are all in order in case we have to leave; our building is missed by all categories of designated floor zone by at least three blocks so hopefully it won't affect us.

NYC potential flood zone map (type in your address to see if you're in an affected zone):

Latest update, shit just got serious; Subway and bus service is being shut down tonight starting at 7PM. NYC mayor just ordered MANDATORY EVACUATION of residents living in Zone A.

Thanks for the zone map Ralph...

Looks like I'm safe, a mile or so from the yellow areas. But I know there will be some flooding at the corner streets. Just hope the sewers can handle it and not have any backup coming through the toilets. I'm more more worry about the wind speed. The possibility of power going out.

Last time when Irene hit, it wasn't that bad but this time, it looks pretty bad around the NYC area.

I'm worried about one of my kids; he went to work today thinking that it would be OK because the storm's not hitting until tomorrow. However, the subways are being closed tonight, so he'll have no way to get home.

Oh, and BTW, here's a little tidbit from CNN:

[Update 11:42 a.m.] Why could Hurricane Sandy send waters as high as 11 feet rushing inland? Because of its size, not its intensity, said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center.

According to Bloomberg, no one is going to be 'arrested' if they don't leave, however, he's right in that if you place yourself at risk, and then need help, you'll endanger the emergency personnel and burden them away from assisting others. For people that want it spelled out bluntly, in other words, he's calling people who stay, selfish. But then again, it's hard to make everyone leave when people don't feel that their property is safe. I'm surprised that they didn't mobilize guard units to patrol the streets.

The weather people usually blow things out of proportion. I highly doubt that this storm would create much damage. My friends and relatives are still partying over there. Then again, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

So far it's not that bad around here, fairly quiet, but at other places on the news, it was pretty bad. They keep saying the worst has yet to come...

Was just out on 8ave, some places are still open for business, father didn't have to go to work so he went to yum cha with his friends...

Yea, the wind have gotten a lot stronger, from time to time, it's just howling through, I can see the winds blowing at the trees with force.
