Three people have been arrested after a suspected burglar was stabbed to death at a home in Salford.

The intruder was in a gang attempting to get into a property in Salford, Greater Manchester, just before midnight on Wednesday.

The householder is believed to have defended his home as the group, who were wearing balaclavas, began their raid.

The dead man, 26, who has not yet been named, was apparently carried away from the house by the other gang members.

Police have put up a 100m cordon around the terrace house, which backs onto open scrubland.

Residents said they understood intruders had tried to break through the back door and a woman inside had called 999.

Greater Manchester Police said an investigation was in its early stages and further details about the incident will be released later.

A spokesman said: "Police are investigating after a man died in Salford.

"Just before midnight, police were called to an address on Ethel Avenue, Pendlebury, following reports of a burglary and a group of men carrying an injured man on to Hospital Road.

"On arrival at Hospital Road, police found a 26-year-old man with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Two men and a woman have been arrested and remain in police custody."

The death comes just 48 hours after David Cameron vowed to bring in stronger measures to protect homeowners defending their property.

"We will put beyond doubt that homeowners and small shopkeepers who use reasonable force to defend themselves or their properties will not be prosecuted," he said

The reform will mean they can use reasonable force if they believe their property is under threat. Currently, they can only act if they feared for their lives.

It was one of several proposals announced by the Prime Minister as he took a tougher stance on law and order, appeasing the Tory right.

The change is expected to be introduced into the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offences Bill within the next few months.

The Ministry of Justice said it could not comment on the case while police are investigating.

But a spokesman confirmed the law is set to be clarified so that homeowners and small shopkeeper can use reasonable force to defend themselves and their properties.

Hopefully the homeowners will be released ASAP and the other thieves can think twice before entering another persons house.

I have read similar cases in the US too .. Sometimes, I find it stupid that homeowners get prosecuted for defending themselves or properties. In fact, I remember reading a case where a homeowner set up those arrow thing that shoot at whomever try to break in when the family was away for vacation. A burglar broke in and was shot to death .. the homeowner had to pay fine, compensate the burglar's family and served time for man slaughter or something. The judge said the homeowner set up the trap to kill and it was wrong when no one in the family was in harm way.

^ i agree with that, i dont think you should set up traps, there are situations where an innocent person (no intention of steeling) could end up getting shot. I dont think the family should have been compensated though.

The laws are soon to change in the UK, atm we can only use force if we feel our lives are in danger, but the new laws allow us to use force if we feel our property is in danger too.

That thin line with the amount of force you can use on a suspected burglar.

^ yeah, but in most cases when caught they end up dead or seriously battered if they are lucky. when you put a persons life is in danger or cause them to think it's in danger, your life is in danger too.

After all they did, in fact, killed someone right? So its arguable that they might have to be a fine + prison.

BUT, on the other hand... they were defending themselves. I'm with the home owners on this one.

It's rather the home owners gets robbed + death, or the burglars get owned. Obviously you'll protect your own shit..
