She, at the same time, became the spokesperson of many brands, like the Four Seas, the Red Cross, Netvigator, etc. Her career had flourished with her increasing exposure in public. Ups and Downs of a Rising Pop Princess (2001-2002) In 2001, she released her first compilation album 'Love Joey', which later on became the Best Selling Album of the Year. This is considered very impressive for a singer that has been around for less than 2 years. She then released two Cantonese albums, All New Summer Holiday and Solemn on Stage. In November, she held her second live concert 'H20+ Solemn on Stage Joey Yung Live in Concert 2001' and began her singing career in Taiwan after she released her first Mandarin album 'Honestly'. By the end of the year though, her career crisis arose because of the strain in her vocal cords and the criticism from the public of being plump. In 2005, Joey released her compilation album, Love Joey 3, and a Canto-pop album, Bi-Heart. Advertising her concert, Reflection of Joey's Live, which spanned a period of eight days in October and November, Joey exhibited a very sexy image in the poster. The theme song of the concert, 好事多為, was arranged and keyboarded by a Korean composer, which is a rare practice in Hong Kong. Funded by Sony Ericsson, EEG found the top production crew to produce the MTV of the theme song. Unlike the concerts she held before, she had invited many guests in this concert. Besides, she had added more dancing elements in the concert, which are greatly favoured by the public. After the concert, Joey suffered from sore throat owing to the strain in her vocal cord. Several days after, she worked without chatting with other people with a view to let her vocal cord relax. Under the heavy workload, she hardly managed to spend several days receiving acupuncture treatment in Nanjing to have her voice restored. On the Christmas Day, in the prize giving ceremony held by the Metro Radio Hong Kong, she won eight awards, being the artist to have gained the most prizes. Sales of all her CDs reached at least 5 million copies in 2004, which is impressive, as Canto-pop CD sales are usually about 100,000 copies. She has also won IFPI Best Selling Singer Awards since she started her career. It is also estimated that the total income from field of advertisements in 2004 was about HK $10 million. In 2005, she has purchased two flats in Jardines Lookout, Hong Kong for HKD $40 million. It is not surprising that she has invested since she has earned more than HKD $60 million last year. In Jan 2006, she has received, again, many awards such as the most popular female singer award for the consecutive third time. She has also won other awards such as Golden song etc. During the Hong Kong IFPI record sales awards 2005, Joey once again for the 2nd year in a row, was the best selling female artist. On Feb. 27, 2006, Joey released another album, Ten Most Wanted, her all-new cantonese album. More time has been put in the production of this CD than any other CD Joey's produced. Joey says that this album was to try new music styles, and work with different musicians. One of the musicians behind this CD is well praised by Joey, #REDIRECT Mavis Faan, wrote two of the songs out of this CD, Get Fit with Jane Fonda and Torn Tongue. Both songs are fast songs that are completely different from the previous Joey songs. It appears that her new music styles are well accepted by the public. Sammi Cheng Biography: Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) (Cantonese: Cheng Sau-Man; Mandarin pinyin: Zhèng Xìuwén, born August 19, 1972, Birth Name: Twinnie Cheng, Place of Origin: Hong Kong, parents from Chaozhou, Guangdong) is a Hong Kong actress and Cantopop singer. With much success in the Hong Kong music industry, Sammi became one of Hong Kong's pop divas. She also has a successful film career, particularly in the romantic comedy genre. Her goofy, sometimes scatterbrained image went over well with Chinese audiences. In 2000 she made a series of romantic comedies with singer/actor Andy Lau and director Johnnie To, including Needing You (2000) and Love on a Diet (2001), which were hits and incorporate some elements of screwball comedy. Beginning: Sammi entered the entertainment industry through an annual singing contest, New Talent Singing Awards in 1988, when she was only 16. Though she eventually placed third in the competition, the sponsoring record company, "Capital Artist", offered her a contract. At the time, Sammi was still in school, so she had to learn to balance her studies with her blossoming singing career. Before finishing school, Sammi managed to release 3 albums: sammi, Holiday and Never Too Late. These albums were considered somewhat successful for a new artist, but they didn't push Sammi to the level of an A-list celebrity. Transformation: In 1993, Sammi realized that in order to reach the next level of stardom, she had to create a unique image for herself. At the time, another rising female artist, Faye Wong, had started a wild/crazy fashion trend in the music industry. Capitalizing on the attention she had been getting from her duet with Andy Hui, "其實你心裡有沒有我" (Do you really have me in your heart?), Sammi went through a complete 180-degree transformation; she dyed her hair orange and purposely 'westernized' her pronunciation of Chinese, as well as working out to lose her babyfat. At that time, hair dying was only popular among gangsters and it was a 'taboo' for artists to try and look rebellious. Sammi also came out with her 4th album, "鄭秀文的快樂迷宮" (Sammi's Happy Maze), which included the hit single, "Chotto 等等" (Chotto Matte). Her new image fit perfectly with the new single, which was an upbeat song, and it helped Sammi boost her singing career even further. In 1994, Sammi continued to capitalize on her wild new image. Her first album of that year was "大報復" (Big Revenge). The album included the mega hit "叮噹" (Ding Dong), which became one of Sammi's signature songs. With her new fame also came a lot of backlash. Critics stated that Sammi purposely "westernized" her Cantonese: instead of saying "Ding Dong", Sammi pronounced it as "Deen Dong". Despite the criticism, the song was well received by the general public. Throughout the rest of 1994, Sammi continued to release hit singles such as: Ten Commandments, Not Your Typical Love, Passion Island, Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo, Amnesia and Bitter Love. Rise to superstardom: In the beginning of 1995, Sammi did not renew her contract with Capital Artists. The record company decided to put her on a sideline and focus on other artists. Sammi disappeared from the public for nearly half a year. It was later revealed that Warner Music have signed Sammi as their recording artist. Sammi wanted a fresh start, so she let her hair turned back into black and didn't have the wild image that she used to have. Her first album with Warner Music, "I Can't Give You Up - 捨不得你" was well received by the public. The album released 3 hit singles, "Gentlemen, you are so fine today - 男仕今天你很好", "I Can't Give You Up - 捨不得你", and "The Mourning Song for Love - 愛的輓歌". Panasonic also signed Sammi as their spokesperson for their CD Player, while using "I Can't Give You Up - 捨不得你" as the theme song. The song gained tremenous airplay and popularity and it boosted Sammi back into spotlight. By the end of the year, she has earned awards for the song as well. In 1996, Sammi released her first Mandarin album, "Worth It - 值得". The album remained one of the best selling albums for a 'new artist' in Taiwan. The song "Worth It - 值得" also gained tremendous amount of popularity and airplay in many Mandarin speaking countries. During the summer blockbuster season, Sammi also returned to the big screen with her romantic comedy, "Feel 100% - 百分百感覺", with Ekin Cheng and Gigi Leung. This movie was a huge box office success due to the attractivness towards young adults. In conjunction with the movie success, Warner Music released the second album, "Can't Let Go - 放不低". The album was a huge success with hit singles like, "Beware of Women - 小心女人", "Can't Let Go - 放不低" and "Owe Nothing - 不拖不欠". At this time, Panasonic also used "Can't Let Go - 放不低" as the theme song for second commerical promotion of their CD player. With the pop divas such as Sally Yeh and Faye Wong putting their careers on the sideline, the HK music industry was eagerly looking for the next pop diva. Cass Pang, Amanda Lee, Vivian Chow and Sammi Cheng were considered to be the candidates. In order to secure her place among the competitions, Sammi finished her much successful year with her first concert, titled "Sammi's X-Dimension Concert - 鄭秀文X空間演唱會". The concert was very successful and also created unforgettable styles such as the Nike eyebrow, the golden bra and the big rose. At the same time, she also released her final 1996 album, "Deep Passion - 濃情" which produced more hit singles such as "X Party - X派對", "Tacit Agreement - 默契", "The Angel of Calcutta, Mother Teresa - 加爾各答的天使-德蘭修女", "Let's Talk About Love (duet with Sally Yeh) - 談情說愛" and "Hesitation - 猶豫". By the time music awards come around, Sammi came out as the biggest winner with her very first, "The Most Popular Female Artist", "Top 5 Best Selling Artists", "Top Selling Female Artist" and various awards for her songs, "Can't Let Go", "Owe Nothing", "Worth It" and "Tacit Agreement". By the beginning of 1997, Sammi confirmed her status as the new pop diva in Hong Kong. She started out the year with a brand new Mandarin album, "Waiting For You - 為你等" and a couple of months later, a new Cantonese album, "Our Theme Song - 我們的主題曲". Both of these albums were very successful.
