ATV’s executive director Ip Ka Po (葉家寶) has announced that the revived station is expecting to hire at least 100 more employees for its news department. At a signing event with Kong Shum held in Admiralty yesterday, Ip Ka Po revealed that canceled ATV programs will official go back on air starting August 1.

“Good Morning Asia, the news program at noon, the evening news at six, and the late-night news at ten will all be back on air,” said Ip. He also added that ATV plans to revive its Mandarin-language news and English-language news.

“However, we are short on people. Our colleagues in the news department wants to quickly go back to work with these golden programs.” Ip then revealed ATV’s plans on developing a new frequency, which may be a 24-hour finance channel. “As a result, we’re going to have to hire up to 100 more people.”

A few days ago, ATV was fined $300,000 HKD for airing a false news report back in March. The report falsely stated that ATV’s major investor would sell the controlling stake to HKTV’s Ricky Wong (王維基). Ip said ATV’s new investor will be taking care of the fines. “We will be more careful with our news in the future,” he said.

A few years ago, ATV accused Ricky Wong of theft, forcing the latter to sue ATV and ATV’s former executive director James Shing (盛品儒) for defamation. A pre-trial review was finally held yesterday, and the official trial will be held in November.

well i dont think its actually a bad investment especially, the new owner is from china
I dont know if you have heard the analysis of why this mainland guy is investing in HK
Investing in media is very profitable, current market in china is very big and it should be no problem for atv ready to produce programs for Mainland CHINA and abroad
    especially with extra funding
It will be a satellite TV station and does not need public broadcasting in HK. I think he chooses to invest in HK, like many other mainland Chinese, is because it is still easier to operate in HK than in China; China's goverment has too much influence/restriction on production/broadcasting in mainland. New Investor sees this as an opputunity, sufficient facility is already available at ATV, it quite resonable to invest in ATV

even of just broadcasting old programs with a new chanel in CHINA can earn money from sponsors, its the chinese and international market that ATV will cater to

It depends if they can make any good deals in Mainland. Right now, ATV's brand name is pretty much garbage. People just don't have fate in them to go anything well. Some might think it's an opportunity to fix some of their issue and make it work. A TV station/company shouldn't be losing money if run properly. There is pretentious there to make money. Just have to find a way. They still live in the 90's.

hmm not sure they can actually be saved anymore, better to rebrand and start again I think!

  8. Are they actually reviving? or have they lost so many that they couldn't even air a news show. They pretty much just air stuff they've bought from chin AGES ago... they tried to keep the news department for daily broadcasts but couldn't pay for wages....

It's sad to see ATV like this... HK needs more stations..

  9. Creating 100 pieces of work in HK is not big but, that 100 people can enjoy a better living. Who is not happy when they are employed

People want to have secured jobs and not have to worry about getting paid or fired. ATV may being hiring people now but you just don't feel like these jobs are secured. For the time being, having a job is better than not working. So who can ATV actually hired and who would want to work there. ATV has been caught lying and making it seem like it's doing better than it's reality. I sure don't want to work there if there are better options for me.

I hope ATV is really revived and gives TVB a run for their money. TVB's quality has been lacking a lot lately...they come up with a few good series and then stuff a bunch of shitty dramas in between.

They have a lot of ground to cover if they ever want ATV to be relevant again

  12. getting news department going is one thing ... being relevant ever again is another though
