ATV’s broadcast of HK Film Awards deemed a success

The <<29th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony>> aired on ATV Sunday night and the reactions from the viewing audience have been very positive. Yesterday, ATV’s Vice-Chairman Yip Jia Bao and the HK Film Awards Association Chairman Gordon Chan held a press conference to announce the ratings for the show, indicating that at one point during the broadcast, the ratings actually beat out TVB. Yip Jia Bao stated: “The average overall rating for the award ceremony was 9 points, however the moment when Best Picture was announced, the ratings actually peaked at 15.2 points (approximately 960,000 viewers), which is about 55% of the audience pool. This proves that if there is a truly good show, the audiences will tune in. Of course, our broadcast wasn’t without flaws – we will definitely review and hopefully make next year’s broadcast even better.”

Yip Jia Bao also indicated that the ratings did not include audiences who tuned in via their HD channel, so if those audiences are included, the overall ratings would actually be 11 points with the peak at 18 points. He also revealed that Sunday night’s ceremony actually overran by 1 hour – ATV has not yet calculated how much advertising it has lost as a result of this, as their primary concern was to listen to audience’s wishes for a complete broadcast and give them a show that they would enjoy watching. As for ATV’s reaction to many of the presenters and guests mentioning TVB throughout the ceremony, Mr. Yip said: “Didn’t know at all and did not request any investigation. No need to make such a big deal over a trivial matter. Ms. Virginia Lok also had quite a few ‘appearances’ – her background is with our ‘friend station’ as well as in movies, plus many of the guests and winners started their careers with TVB.”

HK Film Awards Association Chairman Gordon Chan stated: “With these ratings, we can finally relax…I remember that in the past, when ATV broadcast the Film Awards, they also beat out TVB at certain points during the broadcast. In reality, audiences are not ‘numb’ – it’s really a matter of whether there is a concern for a particular situation….luckily, there are still audiences out there who care about HK film as well as the Film Awards.” (Will you guys consider giving the broadcast rights to ATV for the 2012 ceremony as well?) “It’s an open bid for the broadcasting rights – in the past, there may have been some doubt, but the playing field is more level now, so anything can happen.” (There are rumors that this year, the actual number of votes that each nominee received will be announced?). “No, only the nominees will have access to the information – it won’t be made public. Plus, in the past, there have never been requests to verify the vote counts.”

On another note, TVB’s strategy of utilizing <<Super Trio>> and the finale for <<Fistful of Stances>> to combat the <<HK Film Awards>> actually worked out as well, since they did not lose much ratings-wise. The first part of <<Super Trio>> garnered average ratings of 25 points (approximately 1.59 million viewers) and the second part averaged 24 points (approximately 1.52 million viewers). The finale for <<Fistful of Stances>> garnered average overall ratings of 37 points (approximately 2.35 million viewers), with a peak showing of 43 points (approximately 2.74 million viewers) during the scene when Jacky Heung fools Dominic Lam.

    << Super Trio>> receives 25 complaints

As far as complaints from the audience goes, TVB received 4 phone calls from viewers expressing dissatisfaction with <<Super Trio>>, complaining that the games on the show are ‘degrading, belittling, insulting, dangerous, and a bad influence on young children.’ The HK Broadcasting Authority also received 25 complaints about the <<Super Trio>> show (content of the complaints similar to the ones TVB received). On the contrary, the Broadcasting Authority only received 1 complaint about the <<HK Film Awards>> (complaint was about certain guests ‘promoting’ TVB shows on stage).

lol no surprise there for super trio, the games were friggin insane haha but i was cracking the shit up. hopefully they'll keep most of the games although i think the chair one is going to get cut and the water one is pretty dangerous as choking on water could do bad things for the celebrities, others might not want to come although i expect sammy leung and timmy to do whatever haha.

they should definately take out the game where they splash liquids onto people and the chair+balloon one. Guys need their things you know? :)

But the "guessing the word" game.. where the guy is on a treadmill is alright. .better than before. And the game with the fingers.. cracks me up too. But the game that involves where ladies use their chest to pop balloons.. they shuold take that one out too. Seems painful. And the IQ question part.. i wonder if they have earplugs because.. thats a lot of balloon popping.

I kinda enjoy the girl and balloon game. I hope they have more interesting games as well.

For the HK film award on ATV, they didn't seem like they had a chance with TVB anyways but it was still better than their usual shows.
