  1. A former baker who won £9million on the National Lottery has died penniless just five years after scooping the jackpot. Keith Gough, 58, died in hospital after blowing most of his winnings on country homes and luxury cars. His marriage to wife of 25 years Louise fell apart in 2007 and he lost most of his friends after he began drinking heavily.

Penniless: Keith Gough, 58, pictured with his ex-wife Louise after they won £9million on the lottery in 2005, has died in hospital from a long illness He was checked into the Priory rehabilitation clinic in Birmingham, where he was targeted by a conman who stole more than £700,000 from him over two years, and had been living with his nephew in Broseley, near Telford.

Mr Gough, who once leased an executive box at the Premiership's Villa Park, died at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital on Saturday after battling a long illness.

Fraudster: James Price was jailed for three years and four months for conning Mr Gough out of £700,000

Along with his ex-wife, the couple sold their £160,000 semi-detached home in Bridgnorth and moved to a £500,000 house nearby in 2005 following their big win. He quit his job as a baker, but then started spending his fortune by splashing out on racehorses, a BMW, a £1million country home in Cheshire and £35,000 on the executive box at his beloved football team Aston Villa. But his extravagant spending meant he lost his former friends and he started drinking. Two years after their lottery win, Mr Gough split with wife Louise - with whom he has a 15-year-old son - and he was left with just £1.5million of his fortune.
It was while he was in rehab that he was targeted by convicted conman James Prince, who persuaded him to invest money in business ventures before running off with a total of £700,000.

Prince was eventually caught and jailed for three years for fraud. The couple had bought their winning ticket from a newsagent in Broseley. Shop owner Barabara Homer said she still remembered the day they bought the ticket.

She told the Shropshire Star: 'It was a great boost for the area and everyone was really pleased.

'It's a thing you can only dream of and you never think it will happen locally.'

Mr Gough's family were too upset to speak.

  2. That's just balls... and usually people who win the lottery, really do get their lives messed up..... due to over spending.

  3. if you win the lotto there is a good chance youll lose your friends, youll lose stability because you wont be working or doing anything constructive anymore and youll eventually get bored with nothing left to aim for if your not careful with the money and how you spend it.

hats why you get rich people killing themselves

  4. if i hit the lotto... i think i'll remain the same, just with nicer stuff.

  5. for me a nice house in the country and a bmw M5 and whatever my immediate fam wants, house for my parents, bro and sis, sorted

sigh ... so many stories about lottery winners end up in bankruptcy or penniless. If I win, I doubt that'll happen; I will really appreciate the opportunity ... opportunity to help the less fortunate, the opportunity to double or triple or quadruple the winnings via investments etc.

If i won i'd only tell my closest friends, invest 40% at a regular interest rate, invest another 50% in a bank stock that pays dividends and spend 10%.

Honestly, with almost 15 million dollars, even if you're only getting 1% back over the year in interest, that's still 150 thousand dollars a year to spend and should be more than enough to live comfortably. More likely you'd be getting closer to 3% back, which is a shitload of money.

The first thing anyone should do when winning the lottery is see a reputable CFA.

  14. yeah investing is the best way but with talk about the economy i think i would spend about 75% on Gold bullion, that stuff is becoming more expensive and wont lose its value, not for now anyway. i could imagine someone having 15 mil dollars and the amero or w/e kicking in and the person ending up with maybe 3 mil if they are lucky.

if i won the lottery, i'll still continue to attend school/work. Life will past by slow if you just sit at home and do nothing with your millions of dollars. I'd rather still work, but i just can get whatever i want.
