The Ozzies did that again. This time, the Australian and Malaysian scientists announced last week they had discovered a new virus likely carried by bats that can cause respiratory illness in humans. They called it the Melaka virus. The Melaka states are throwing a fist and is upset the naming of a new bat-borne virus... guess the historical state only enjoy positive discovery tagged on them. touchy... -batman
No, it's not found in Malacca. I am a Malaccan, and I find the CM's move logical. I wouldn't want my state be tainted by the name "virus' too, people might have a wrong impression of the state being a state full of 'virus' and so on. Especially the tourists! So to the OP, what's wrong with that? It's only logical to try to maintain a clean image for the state and funnily, it was not even found in Malacca.
From the newspaper, there is no description about where the origin is. Since it is tagged Melaka, I suspect it is close proximity to the state. Good or bad, a name is still a name... I doubt the ozzies will change the name of the virus as getting name change/erratta after the fact is usually difficult after it has been published on scientific papers. I think Malaccan should be more open-minded. Having a virus name after the state doesn't means the state has infectious disease. -smart
Didn't I just post an article from the newspaper above your post? And highlighted where it was found? Dude, it's not about Malaccans. It's about the impression it would give to OTHER people. The tourists for example. People like you. Not everyone is well-informed. They might just hear of the virus and then go, "Eww, Malacca? I am not going there anymore".
Sorry, no ill intension to anyone but I heard after malaka got tagged with this, fellow Melaccans said... shit! this is celaka. -tongue2
by the u put it B-Rain..... it is as though malaysian purposely come up wit it...to attract not only foreign tourist...BUT MORE foreign scientist as well...to come......n visit and stay to do research... hahahaha...yeah...indirectly it will boost the economy of malaysia.
