Anyone go to Pmall today and witness the raid?? "$4M of pirated DVDs seized in GTA Nov. 26, 2005. 08:36 PM Fifteen people have been arrested in Toronto's east end after officials seized pirated DVDs worth $4 million in three separate raids. Police from Toronto, York Region, the RCMP, Canada Customs and motion picture officials raided three malls in the Greater Toronto area. Roughly 200,000 DVDs selling at $20 a piece were recovered. Officials from the Canadian Motion Pictures Distributors Association called it the largest seizure of counterfeit DVDs ever done in Canada. Police also shut down labs they believe were used to create illegal DVDs. Motion picture officials say Hollywood loses around $35 million in sales a year due to illegal DVD sales in the GTA alone." *it was on sunday
I heard rumors about this at work a few weeks ago. <-- I work for customs canada Yeah so I went to Pmall like an hr after the raid for dinner, it was kinda scary cuz there were sooo many shops empty. Im guessing the 3 malls are Pmall / First Markham / Times Square Edit - oh well theres still hundreds of shops in richmond hill, scarb, and markham I can get some pirated dvds from
wow i better tell my family (uncle) rofl *calls* but yea pmall sells em like it isnt illegal... kinda saw it comin .. :rolleyes2
Is it really true that those stores dont sell the pirated stuff until after 4pm and on weekends? Cuz thats when the RCMP and customs are supposingly doing their "searches".
You'd think with all the gunshots going off in Toronto lately, the police would have better things to do than to raid chinatown over DVD's. Gov't tax money well spent as usual.
Haha.. geez, it's about time. I've always wondered how come police were so stupid and didn't know that those were pirated DVDs... Is this the first raid ever? (I'm not a Toronto resident, but i've been there often enough and to all those Chinese malls) By raiding these businesses, I bet it takes out a big part of the business for these malls, which is kinda sad b/c I do really like those malls. Oh well, those pirated DVDs weren't even good quality... nor did the features ever work... ***Ah crap, this is old news. I thought it was new >.<... my bad...
I heard about the raid too and when I went to Pmall after like a month from when it supposedly occured, everything was back in business. I didn't notice much a of difference. They still had bootleg Harry Potter, etc.
if they're going to be illegal, might as well make them expensive so you'll have enough money for all of the court fees and lawyers
