well ok. here goes. iunno y, but yesterday when i started my comp the following happened:
    1. my icons are gone
    2. my taskbar is up, but any program i start doesnt. eg. control panel, word, outlook, run, help and support, my documents
    3. i have this windows explorer problem
    4. i can only access the internet by using the web help from the windows explorer error
    5. all my programs don't have icons
    6. i cannot create a new task from ctrl+alt delete.

well as u can see, by looking at the other biggest problem topic i started a few months ago, i am so bad at computers, but i still want to customize and junk. well, if anyone can help. PLEASE DO! reply as so as possible. BECAUSE ITS AN EMERGENCY.

i have tried system restore (only program that works), but no joy. its still the same. i was thinking of reinstalling windows xp, but i have some hw on my comp...which i forgot to save onto a disk. and i think by installing xp again, its gonna be gone. but i dont care about the hw that much, cuz id rather redo the hw, than not have my computer up and running.

ive already posted on jcxp.com, but i want more answers so its here too

    u can do a repair a windows installation :
    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
and one obvious and basic question?..are u running anti virus software..if not..get urself a copy of avast antivirus or avg antivirus..both free....and run a couple basic spyware tools such as spy bot, adaware, spyware blaster...do all this first before the repair windows installation method..
also, wat exactly were u doing before these issues started?

I think I know what you did....
Did you have "Style XP" and then "Delete it" - as in uninstall?
B/c that happen to me before, and I had to reformat my computer

yeh try to repair windows first, that should allow you to recover the data, then reformat and reinstall windows

I use Acronis TrueImage to clone my OS harddrive, so if anything goes wrong i just recover that image and the comp goes back exactly to the point i made the clone :D

    nope

and i think i know the problem now, like why it started. my mom wanted to restore the computer/laptop. and then out power went out, a powersurge of the whole district. and we didnt have the power on till iunno, after 2am. so nedxt morning this happened. does this help in helping my comp?

it seems like the restoration of ur computer was screwed up by the power surge, since u must not power down ur computer during the restoration process...

i assume u already fixed the problem since this last post is already 3 ago, but if u haven't i suggest:

    1. if u have another computer avaible (no laptops) u could remove the harddisk from the computer that is troubling u to the other computer and backup the files there.

    2. if u happen to have 2 different logical partition in ur system (ie: C, D with D not equal to ur optical drive) u can install another copy of win xp onto D and recover ur lost files from C
