Boy, 6, Tries To Drive To School

  1. The parents of a six-year-old boy have been charged with child endangerment after he crashed the family car while trying to drive himself to school.

The youngster, who has not been named, missed his school bus in Wicomico Church, Virginia, early on Monday morning.

His father had already left for work, leaving the boy and his four-year-old brother at home with their mother, who was still asleep.

After she failed to wake up in time to help him get ready, he decided to take the keys to the Ford Taurus and make his own way to Northumberland Elementary School.

But after driving for around 10 miles, possibly standing up, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins said the boy was saved from serious injury by "a multiple array of miracles".

The child was taken to a local hospital, treated for minor injuries and released in time for school.

He had "a strong desire" to go to school, even after the incident, so that he wouldn't miss the school breakfast or gym class, Sergeant Tom Cunningham said.

Both of the boy's parents were arrested and charged with child endangerment.
"There was an outstanding court order that the children not be left with the mother alone because she had some previous issues," Sheriff Wilkins said.
The boy and his brother are now being cared for by foster parents, he added.

Wow, I can't believe they blamed it on the parents...
    I mean, if I'm fucking asleep, I can't really control what they're doing.. -_-
Even if the mom have the issue, the dad still have to work...

  3. ^ i think the parents have to be more careful with the keys and what they teach their children, if that child happened to run a member of your family over for example im sure you would be demanding justice and as the child is to young, responsibility would be passed over to the those responsible for the child.

u know... as much as i understand this should be the parents' fault, even if the mother had "prior issues"... u can't really blame this on the parents... i mean when i think back to when i was 6... i always wanted to grab the keys to the car and drive...

and to say that parents should be more responsible with their car keys... honestly... car keys aren't a gun... i mean, there's safety mechanisms on guns, guns are put in safes, locked in drawers, how many of us honestly lock our keys in a vault b4 we go to sleep? my car keys are either on my computer table, latched to my pants or in a basket right next to the door...

and even if we do think about putting our keys somewhere "safe", normally it'd just be somewhere a kid wouldn't normally be able to reach, but damn it, when i was 6, i would build a ladder of folding chairs and grab something i couldn't reach...

kids are determined to do things when they're young, good or bad... this is more an unfortunate accident than bad parenting... seeking responsibility for something like this in the form of criminal behaviour is retarded... sure i'd understand seeking responsibility for damages, but to lock up BOTH!? parents? might as well lock up the idiots at Ford for not making cars child proof, hell lock up the decendants of the man who invented the car itself ffs... and while we're at it, lock up the guys on TV that probably influenced the kid into thinking he could drive... lets get everyone that could have influenced the kid or allowed the kid in the seat of the car for child endangerment... this sorta bs witch hunt for responsibility is craptastic ain't it?
