A bus driver in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA, has been forced to resign after he was filmed flattening a snowman on the wrong side of the road. A group of students at the University of Illinois had built the snowman on the road, then set up a video camera to film drivers slowing down to avoid it.

Much to the shock and amusement of the students, a bus approached on the wrong side of the road and flattened the snowman. The footage, which can be seen below, was posted online with the title: 'Insane Bus Driver Brutally Murders Snowman'. Reacting to the resignation, Jan Kijowski of Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District said: "Whenever an incident occurs, we try to use it as a teaching opportunity to remind the operators what are the safe and good choices that can be made." She would not identify the bus driver.

Members of the public have reacted angrily to the resignation, claiming the bus driver's actions made the road safe. A Facebook group called Save The Bus Driver, set up to get the driver his job back, has the support of over 3,000 people as of today (December 15 2010).

What a world we live in, a bus driver that made the road safe by removing the obstacle gets sacked and the kids that put lives at risk get away with it.

Well, the bus driver drove on wrong side of the road, too. So I mean it's pretty much double-edged sword on this matter

This was fucking stupid. fuck those kids. I would imagine that something like a "deer effect" would happen and get someone killed. The guys who created the snowman should be punished.

Interesting though....we can two sides of argument here.
    1. Wrong side of the road: I saw the bus driver signal there...so i think he intended ...
    2. However, the bus driver should of slow down...with that speed..it could be easy oversee

What the kids did was wrong but i dont agree with what the bus driver did neither, he drove on the wrong side of the road just to crush that snowman and when he did that, did he really thought of it as making the road safer for the other people and did he really do it for the sake of crushing that snowman only?

  7. ^ you obviously dont know the dangers of hitting a pack of snow with force?

Let me as you xmiss.. you are driving down the street and its dark and its snowing, all of sudden a figure appears in the middle of your way that looks like a person, you hit your brakes but the snow on the ground causes your tires to slip and so the brakes dont work... you are forced to travel in the line or swerve out of the way into the other lane that has traffic coming the other way.... you decide not to hurt someone else so you go slamming into the snow man with force and damages your hood the under side of the snow scraps the button of your car doing damage to what is underneath ie. your muffler... are you going to be mad? who is going to pay for the cost to fix your car?

the bus driver should not have been fired as it may have been in good fun but it also made the road safer for other people traveling

  8. if he was traveling the opposite direction i wouldn't see a problem with him running it over but he swayed over to hit it and who knows how many passengers could be in there.

  9. ^ city bus drivers are a lot better drivers than you would think, i'm sure he knew what he was doing

if your parents drove into it and got injured or killed I'm sure you wouldn't think it was entertaining.

Bus driver should be ticketed for crossing to lane of opposite traffic; he should be suspended for using his vehicle to ram a stationary object at high speed, something for which the vehicle was not designed* and could have damaged the municipal asset, injured himself and or passengers. Secondly, pranksters have been known to put other, solid or much denser objects within seemingly soft or benign looking road blocks (like snow) and the bus may have been severely damaged. The driver did not do anything legally wrong (except for crossing to the opposite lane), but rather demonstrated extreme lack of judgment.

The individuals that did this should be arrested, charged and prosecuted for conspiracy, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct, as they purposely created a traffic hazard that may have both injured motorists and damaged property. Even drivers that swerve to avoid hitting the object have have been put at risk for losing control of their vehicles because of the poor road conditions, or be at risk for being hit by oncoming traffic from the opposite lane. The municipality in question should subpoena Youtube for the ip of the uploader, and police should track them down and arrest them. Like Akki and Bulla alluded to, hitting packed snow at high speed is akin to slamming into a brick wall because of the kinetics involved; there is little humor is this. While the teens may have thought this amusing, they really could have seriously hurt or even killed someone.

In the final analysis, Bus driver? Poor judgment. Kids? Poor judgment and criminal acts. But if you want fairness out of this all, if the bus driver loses his job over this, then the kids should all be expelled from their university. That would really give them the kind of education they need.

    * Municipalities have been long known to used their city buses with forward mounted snow plows to assist with removal operations during winter emergencies. However, since the front of this particular bus was not configured as such, it may have sustained significant damage to its front end from the high speed impact.

with all that snow, I wonder if he even knew it, still he got screwed by this morons..

He's not innocence but what a way to get screwed.

  14. @ Ralph: his actions may have not been to code, but I'm sure he used his moral judgment to decide what to do, had he chose to by pass the opportunity to eliminate a hazardous condition and later found out on the news someone had indeed hit it with force and is in critical condition, how would he feel morally?

selflessness is so hard to achieve these days...
