    The following site

    http://sepc495.se.cuhk.edu.hk/crystal/

Can read out upto a maximum of 500 chinese characters.

All you have to do is to Paste a set of chinese characters.

Tinker with the settings whenever you want it to read out in Mandarin or Cantonese.

Press Synthesize when ready and on the right, it will read it out.

    Pretty neat, impressive, handy, convenient.

this is pretty good for the visually impaired people, but not those that don't have a clue about chinese characters.

I think you could google translate it, that's better but sometimes chinglish comes out (not fully understandable). Then you could import to words and let it read it to you.

    hope that make sense.

It takes too long to load for the video. I think google translate is mostly inaccurate. Just learn Chinese. =)
I think visually impaired people uses windows narrator. It reads out what is happening on the screen.

Yes, google translate is choppy when it comes to interpret language to language.

Try translating a 10worded sentence from english to chinese, then copy the chinese to translate to english - it won't make sense!

Really, I thought they would use magnifier or some other user interface thingy.

Well this is good for people who can listen but cant read. I think theres an option there for just the audio without the video, so maybe that could be an improvement to the loading

You can always turn off the video

Learning Chinese would take you ages to. Plus with this website program, you can also learn chinese from it too by listening to what it reads out

    You got that right!

OK, i will now make almost all overseas chinese (with decent canto) capable of typing chinese.

    1. http://cpime.hk/

dl program from here. i use LSHK. follow their instruction. i think it was right click a certain file and click install.

    2. keyboard set to HK SAR traditional Chinese. (i guess for most people it is bottom left. right click, settings, add, scroll down to Chinese traditional, checkmark the keyboard and the CPIME or w/e.

result looks something like this [IMG]

thats it. you can now use jyutping and type in chinese.

so for example if you want to say crazyman "thank you very much"

you will type crazyman "m(1) goi(1) saai (1) nei (1)"

and you get crazyman "唔該晒你". very simple once you get used to the jyutping romanization. well, obviously you need to know the character as well. which is why i chose that simple sentence because.....

search "thank you" or something on here and find the phrase you want to say
    http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/scripts/wordsearch.php?level=0

well, as you might see their romanization style is a little bit different (numbers, generally. i think the romanized word is the same. so instead of goi1 maybe they use goi6 or something). use that site to check the character so you dont make yourself look retarded.

with the links in this thread you can go from not understand anything. to knowing what is said and even reply. if you cant find anyone to practice with, i recommend hkyoutube. just make some comments there or try to talk with someone.
