The TVB 40th Anniversary Extravaganza <萬千星輝賀台慶> will be taking place tomorrow evening at TVB City. This annual live gala showcases the talents of the station's artistes as well as celebrates the company's anniversary with a host of prizes and cash giveaways to staff and viewers.

A blessing ceremony was held today, where some of the show's MCs including Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Eric Tsang (曾志偉), Liza Wang (汪明荃), Nat Chan (陳百祥) and Amigo Chui (崔建邦) offered incense and wished for the show to go well.

The usually hard-faced Carol was moved to tears yesterday, during the awards ceremony, by Lydia Sum (沈殿霞)'s appearance and her touching speech. When she was asked about this, she smiled that she is very strong when she is on stage and this was the first time she has ever cried whilst hosting a show. She explained that she knew she should not be like this as a host, but she had not been able to visit Lydia whilst she was ill, so she was very emotional when she saw her friend. She added that because Lydia signified so much to her, she found it very hard to hold in her feelings because she is only human after all. She added that the tearful scenes reflected the feelings of all the viewers because most of them have grown up with Lydia on the television.

Liza said she had been to visit Lydia a number of times, but she still felt very upset when she saw how much weight Lydia had lost. Nat said he did not watch the show, but read the reports about the moving scenes and said that this is something everyone has to experience, but it brings home the importance of one's health.

As for Eric, he was disappointed that he did not see Lydia yesterday and added that if he had known she would be present, he would have returned a day early from his work abroad. He said that when he saw everyone crying on the television, he was crying too and he encouraged Lydia to quickly overcome her condition. He said that he knows it was very hard to bear all the chemotherapy, but he wanted her to know that everyone is fighting this battle with her.

It was indeed a very touching scene. I believe most of us here grew up hearing Lydia's laughter, and to see what the disease has done to her is devastating indeed.
