Cecilia Cheung’s Father Suspected in Criminal Intimidation Case

Cecilia Cheung’s (张柏芝) father, Cheung Yan Yung (张仁勇) is suspected to be involved in a criminal intimidation case. Two retail storefronts in the Yau Ma Tei district were splashed with red paint, in which the store owner had also received threats from local triad group, Luen Ying She, last month. The case is suspected to be the triad’s intimidation tactics in an effort to win a multi-million-dollar facility maintenance contract for local buildings in the area.

The store owner of the two damaged retail stores is a man known as Mr. Lai, who is also the Chairman of the Owners’ Corporation of the Man Fai Building. The Mai Fai Building is part of a group of large buildings, known as “Eight Man Buildings,” on Man Yuen Street in the Yau Ma Tei district. The ”Eight Man Buildings” are currently undergoing renovation, each with multi-million maintenance needs.

Local triads reportedly became interested in tendering Man Fai Building’s $20 million external wall maintenance contract. Since Mr. Lai is an influential figure who likely played a role in deciding which party to award the lucrative maintenance contract to, he apparently became the subject of triad intimidation tactics.

Yesterday, the Hong Kong police had nabbed two suspects in the intimidation case for interrogation. One of the suspects was a 49-year-old man known as Mr. Cheng. The other suspect was reported to be Cecilia Cheung’s father, Cheung Yan Yung. Both men are reported to be linked to triads.

Cheung Yan Yung was reportedly granted bail for $10,000 HKD by the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court today. He is required to report to the police twice every week and during the bail-out period, he cannot harass any witnesses in the case.

Cecilia’s Cheung Father Has Triad Ties?

Hong Kong media reported that Cecilia Cheung’s father, Cheung Yan Yung, was a powerful triad leader. He is fond of keeping a moustache, and hence he is nicknamed “Bearded Bravery” on the streets. Actively involved in the territory of Yau Ma Tei, Cheung Yan Yung was reported to have many friends and connections with several influential secret society members. Well known for his loyalty in the triad, he reportedly will do his best to help his “brothers” to ride out difficulties.

Cecilia Cheung Paid Off Gambling Debts for Father

Cheung Yan Yung allegedly has a notorious gambling obsession. He had reportedly accumulated enormous debts, in which Cecilia often ended up paying for them. In 1999, Cecilia Cheung was reportedly threatened with rape by triad members due to her father’s massive debts. She was left alone to fend for herself while her father escaped to Malaysia. At that time, she even called for a media conference to explain the matter, in which she broke down in tears.

The media also reported that Cheung Yan Yung has kept a low profile in recent years, seldom appearing in public so as not to affect his daughter’s career. He reportedly did not even visit Cecilia when she gave birth to her two sons, Lucas and Quintus.
