I'm running on a 2.8ghz celeron processor....it lags like no other when I'm booting the system about 20 days after a reformat. Is it the processor or can it be something else?

I prob would point to the RAM before your processor (although celeron aint top end stuff). More ram can often be the cheapest/simplest upgrade and most noticeable gains.

    What are your system specs?

What are you doing when it lags? What operating system do you use?

New memory will definately give your system a boost, buy another stick of 512mb to make a total of 1GB.
The big hard drive should really cause any real world lag, you can buy one of those super fast super expensive(15,000 rpm) Raptor drives but I doubt you will see any real difference.
Its hard to pinpoint the exact cause of your lag, could be hardware failing, could be software side.
Have you installed any anti virus or firewall, maybe your being bogged down by spyware, etc

1- dont use a background wallpaper
2- control pannel > system > advanced tab > performance setting > visual effects tab > adjust to best performance ----> this will get rid of the xp theme look and change to classic i think, less resource usuage

lol more RAM then is the only suggestion i can give given that i cant actually diagnose your real problem causing lag.

Apart from buy a new computer :D

512 is def enough and it wont lag a system..unless itw bad..i have test systems running on 128mb with a p2 processor.....no lag...as dim said..there can be so many reasons why this sucker lags..literally..from faulty hardware to software...howeer..u siad this happened after a format eh...since u say its lags on when booting....first thing comes to mind is to check what u have in the starup folder...as it would appear that something in there is casuing it to lag..however..are u sure it only lags when booting up?

Check start up folder to see what apps you have loaded in there; To check this:
    -go to start menu
    -then run
    then type, "msconfig", without quotes
    -hit enter
    -windowd pops up
    -go to the "starup" tab
-screen shot that window and post it up here.

Another way might be to downgrade the OS from XP to ME. Performancewise its much better for a Celeron

512 is enough to run XP but if your running lots of windows and apps, 1gb is definately recommended and i recon will give you a boost in boot times.
But yeh definately check what your startup stuff is. Even after a reformat it lags, sounds hardware side to me.

My old dell took 10mins to boot up to login screen and turned out to be a faulty dvd drive, when removed, lag from boot gone!

hhaa..buddy...i'm killing xp on a 128mb...xp pro too....hahano lagging here on bootup...as thas where hes experienceing the prob..now all hes gota do is test the system....once that startup folder is checked...easiest part to start with is hardware...process of elimination with each piece..
