    I was wondering how we can determine if a phone is able to work in the US and overseas. What do we have to look for in the cell phone? What specific thing?

    well in the US, if you want phones to be able to use at other countries, I would say go with GSM phones and hopefully they're unlocked. If they're not unlock, you have to unlock it yourself, take it to a phone shop, or ask the carrier (they might not give you it) to give you the code to unlock. just look for GSM phones that has a least tri-band or quad-band

  3. if you have a gsm phone, and if that phone is quad band, you can get it to work anywhere in the world.

    if triband, wont work in a part of the world, if dual band, only in europe and asia.

    if you have a cdma phone, go to your phone provider, and ask whether your plan supports oversea calling. but that is going to rape your wallet.

    best solution: get a gsm phone, go to your place of interest, purchase a local sim card from that place, and put it into your UNLOCKED GSM PHONE.

    Look at the GSM networks
    * 850 MHz (In America)
    * 900 MHz (In Europe and many parts of Asia and Latin America)
    * 1800 MHz (In Europe and Asia and many parts of Latin America)
    * 1900 MHz (In America)

    for the most part if your phone is dual band it will only work in the area that you purchased the phone. i.e. you purchased a dual band phone form Hong Kong it will only work in the Hong Kong area and no where else. Tri band phones will tend to work everywhere else and quad band phones are better because they provide you with the various spectra around the world with no problem connecting.

    The biggest issue besides the GSM band is whether your phone is locked to the carrier or not. Being locked to a carrier will cause other sim cards to not work with the phone

    japan and korea both GSm but its on a very proprietary band/system that other countries don't use
