Ripping and Burning a DVD Guide If you have a particular DVD that you would like to have a copy of, you can easily rip out the movie and burn it onto a DVD-R / DVD+R, which can be played back on any DVD player. Remember, the only LEGAL way of doing this is purchasing (owning) the DVD you're ripping and the sole purpose of you making a copy is just as a backup, but... use your imagination *cough*netflix/blockbuster*cough* -tongue2 Programs / Hardware you'll need : - a DVD burner. - DVD+R or DVD-R to burn on, i found that either or will work just as fine as the other. - dvdshrink - will be the program you'll use to rip the movies. - dvd decrypter - can be paired with dvdshrink to rip/burn in one operation [optional] - nero - to burn .ISO files [optional] Tutorial : 1. Click on the "OPEN DISC" tab 2. Select the drive where the DVD is. 3. After clicking okay, dvdshrink should be analysing the DVD. I usually uncheck the "Enable video preview" button. I believe it'll speed things up a bit. 4. Once it's done analysing the DVD, it will bring you to a new menu. Click on the "Re-Author" tab. 5. It will bring you to the menu showed below. Under the "Main Movie" section, you should see the movie file itself, you can usually tell its the file by its duration time. 6. Drag that file (usually called Title 1) to the Re-authored DVD section (drag to the left, shown below) 7. Click on the "Backup!" tab. It will bring up "BACKUP DVD" menu. 8. Here you have a choice of the output file. You can either choose ".ISO" and burn it another time (or with nero) or if you've paired dvdshrink with dvd decryptor, you can burn the .ISO in one operation (shown below). 9. Choose the location of where you would like the .ISO to be saved, I recommend the desktop. It'll be a lot easier for you to find. 10. Click OK to finalize your rip. 11. dvdshrink will now encode the movie (w/o menus or extras) into an .ISO, which can then be burned onto a DVD-R/+R and be played back on any standard DVD player. Again, I usually uncheck the "Enable video preview" button to speed things up. Once completely, If you've chosen "ISO Image File" on step 8, it will save your .ISO file wherever you have designated it to be saved to. If you've chosen "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter", it will save your .ISO file AND burn the .ISO straight onto a blank DVD-R/+R. If you opted to burn the .ISO another time, you can use NERO or any other burning software and burn the .ISO. On Nero, you use the "Burn Image to Disc" option. what happens when dvd shrink is not able to rip it? hehe ... sorry. just had to point it out that it's incomplete.
I knew someone was going to ask that, heh. I was going to add onto this tutorial on an alternative way to rip out movies (which is a lot longer in steps and time) than using just dvdshrink. Its a program call ripit4me, which must be paired with dvdshrink. what it actually does is rip the movie differently from dvdshrink, bypassing the dvd structure errors. When its done, it'll bring up dvdshrink, which will allow you to encode and burn the movie. It's not as complicated then it seems but its a hassle to do. I was hoping no one would run into that problem, lol. The only movie's I've had to use RipIt4Me was for De Ja Vu, Pride and a few others. I would say every one out of 20 movies I get, I would have to use RipIt4Me instead of dvdshrink. If a lot of people are getting the "Invalid DVD Structure" error, I guess I'll make a tut for RipIt4Me -dead
If you just wanna backup a dvd you can just use DVDFab. it rips normal dvd movies within 5 minutes, then use nero to burn by dragging and drop the folder that dvd fab creates when ripping the dvd.
I just gave DVDFab a try and I couldn't rip my movie to fit into 1 DVD-R/+R. I unchecked everything that wasn't necessary, basically everything except the english audio and subs, and it still couldn't fit JUST the movie. Am I doing something wrong? I would love to use DVDFAB if it can do all of that in 5 minutes. Thanks
