Although Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and his wife, Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), are now happily married, he admits that their 20-year relationship once hit a bad patch. However, the couple put behind their bumpy past and worked out the sensitive spots, allowing their relationship to grow more.

    A History of Romantic Rumors

Like Captain Cool in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II>, Chilam’s boyish charm easily melted many female hearts when he entered the industry in 1991. Right from the beginning, he was already romantically linked with his label mate, Maple Hui (許秋怡), whom he was rumored to be dating. In 1994, he was linked to his The Legend of the Condor Heroes <射鵰英雄傳> costar, Athena Chu (朱茵). It was alleged that Athena took the initiative to get close to Chilam.

The rumor that linked Chilam with Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) created the most impact. Playing a pair of lovers in Return of the Cuckoo <十月初五的月光>, Charmaine reportedly invested too many emotions in her character while Chilam was still young and unstable. Anita was allegedly shaken by the rumor, and appeared on the filming set to keep an eye on Chilam. The following year in February, Chilam finally married Anita. In 2006, their son, Morton Cheung (張慕童) was born. In 2007, Chilam had rumors with Kenix Kwok (郭可盈) while filming Rouge <紅粉> in mainland China.

    A Relationship Bump

Tabloids recently reported that Anita was afraid Chilam will have an “itch” in his middle-age years, thus prayed for an amulet to “lock” him down. Chilam said, “If want [she wanted] to lock [me], it would have been done 20 years ago. I love her wholeheartedly. There’s no need to do that.”

However, Chilam admitted that there has been an unpleasant time in their relationship. He said, “There was a time when a situation occurred where both of us were hurt. Eventually, we sat down and talked about how to make things better so that it won’t happen again.” Stating that he does not remember unhappy things, he was not specific on when the relationship problems had actually occurred.

Chilam believes that compromise and selflessness are important in any relationship. “It’s not 1 plus 1. Rather, it’s 0.5 plus 0.5, meaning we need to discard half of ourselves and accept the other person’s half. When two people are together, they need to be equal so I’m not a male chauvinist but I will still do what a man needs to do, like protecting my family.”

After knowing each other for more than 20 years, romance has been replaced by practicality. And for that reason, Chilam has also learnt to cherish his family as he understands that nothing should be taken for granted.

“Triumph in the Skies 2″ Movie

Recently, there have been reports circulating that TVB intends to make a movie version of the highly successful Triumph in the Skies 2. When asked if he would take part in the movie, Chilam did not give a direct reply but instead shared his neighbor Maggie Cheung’s (張曼玉) philosophy that he will be selective on quality, rather than film roles for the sake of filming.
