Remembering last year's earthquake the PRC government has seem to have successfully moved the catastrophe off the front pages and let the event settle out of view. Parents who lost children because of suspect school construction, and had protested or called for investigation into possible official malfeasance in building oversight or regulation, have been publicly silenced and politically hounded into submission. And in what may have been a slip up, a provincial official may have Unwittingly Revealed The True Figure of 19,065 Student Deaths during an interview last November. Conceding that those still classified as "missing" would most likely be dead and their bodies never found, that would give a final death toll of around 85,000, with what may be decades of infrastructure reconstruction and massive social upheaval. Many people in China have been openly critical of China's subsequent post quake responsiveness once the world stage spotlight of the Olympics was dimmed with the closing of the games. Adding to the debate, an interesting article appeared about a week ago, that suggested the "timing of the earthquake" may have been accelerated by China's prolific dam construction in the area. I'm sure that this is going to add more to the debate of whether China is forgetting its people in its rush to modernize: In a rush? For a quick synopsis, just read the red highlighted lines. As with anything involving the PRC government, there are more questions than answers... -what? ***And a question: has anyone visited the quake struck area in its aftermath? I'm sure that many others (myself especially) would welcome your comments and first hand insights. Please don't hesitate to post your observations and opinions. Thanks!
