On the contrary, they did this so that Chinese in South Africa could then avail themselves of public benefits that are legally available to blacks only. This was an effort to help disadvantaged Chinese with extra public resources. But they did this rather foolishly. Instead of reclassifying Chinese as Black, they should have just amended the public assistance law to include Chinese as also being eligible. This, I believe, is a vestigial holdover from their apartheid mindset, where race should be the ultimate determinate; rather like the tail wagging the dog here, IMHO. Ralph

someone i used to know lived in south africa last time. at school they had to fill out a form and tick a box for black or white. they had to ask the teacher and the teacher said just to tick white lol.
