my parents are Chinese.. and i born in Latin America.. soo, i know Spanish.. is my mother tongue.. but every time someone hear me speaking spanish they got shocked !!! they put a funny expression on their face.. has this ever happened to you?
cuz they expect u to speak chinese, not espanol xD when i speak spanish, my parents: "waaaaat?" "estoy hablando en espanol." "WAAAAAT speak chinese."
^ agreed! people go by first impressions so if they see you looking Chinese they expect you to have the chinese accent i always get a weird look and appraisal as well for sound very English and it being good... so im totally used to it but then it is normal i guess.. and i have learnt spanish in high school and i wasnt totally 100% good at it hehe
^now u mentioned, i rmb going up to empire state w/ someone, when we walk to the audio guide stand, that person gave him a chinese one, and another chinese one to me, i was like, u think idk english? lol but then when im out w/ some family fds whatsoever, they thought idk chinese (speak/understand well) like my cousins, i was like...jeez i was raised there. all those assumptions lmao
^ totally! my current landlord always assume im like other BBCs and don't know this or that or don't like some traditional chinese food and what not...
That's why you need to take that to your own advantage. For example, you go to a Chinese store and ask for something in English/Spanish or whatever...Get the store clerk confused as hell and frustrate her enough to get her manager to come over. Once the manager comes out, you speak back to her in Chinese. It's a flawless tactic to get what you want!!
good that some people could speak a few languages but i think it will be better if we could speak out mother tongue first. this is my big mistake when i have my kids speaking english instead of chinese. so whenever anyone have kids do speak to them different language especially mother tongue.
instead of surprise for speaking korean in soul, i got a slap on the face .. yeah .. remember your part of speech .. lol
my Spanish teacher was born and raised in Latin America. she cannot speak her mother language and has thick Spanish accent when she speaks English. i am envious of her awesome Spanish, except it'd be a lot cooler if she can speak all three without an accent.

i remember when i used to work @ a mexican fast food place and would take orders in spanish @ the drive thru. the expressions on the customers' faces when they see that i'm not mexican was always funny. =P too bad mt spanish is not that good anymore. need to practice more with my sis & my cunado. =)
Yea. The first time I heard of this I was quite shocked. I know someone who is from Puerto Rico and speaks Spanish and CHinese.
