like all my friends are chinese, but i follow the canadian way because i was born here =P
i think is better to ask your parents, there aren't many members here that are in the marriage age i don't think

^Thats what I do as well. But I guess it can depend on how expensive the wedding it is.

My Dad gave like 400 Pounds to a friend in a red envelope so i think that's the average sum of money.

it really depends how close you guys are. a guide my mum told me is give the amount per person + a lil bit more. just say it cost them 100 pp then you give them 150 or so.

last time i went to a friends wedding i gave a laisee of 50 quids in it
but that is just a soso friend and i really dont know him that well but still got invited after i met him in front of selfridges, that guy even cant remember my name
i still went coz i know he's a nice guy and got nothin better to do after my exams

so i think cash is the best
they can spent it however they want especially covering the cost for the banquet

if he/she is a very good friend and he/she is rich, get them big gift, so they remember you on their anniversary
if he/she is a very good friend and he/she isnt rich, get them cash and a small gift, so they appreciate your understanding
if he/she is soso friend and he/she is rich or isnt, get them cash, just to cover the food they give you

    this is just my opinion
but on the issue of wedding gifts, i cant comment on it since i've never given any out

each event has its purpose, if the person has a grand opening for a shop, yes, 8 works. but now this is wedding, and most verbal congrats are related to 9's so use 9's...even if you ask friends, the bride's maid will ask the guy for door opening money and they are always with the 9's...
