So i just got a call this morning from BMO Mastercard regarding someone in Quebec making a 2400 dollar purchase at Sears on my credit card. They asked me to confirm that I still had my card (I was pretty sure it hadn't disappeared in the night and managed to find its way several thousand miles to Quebec) and then to cut it up and they would be sending me a new card. I kinda wonder who is stupid enough to make a large purchase, likely on a furniture or appliance item several provinces away from the original cardholder's address of residence. That said, I am still rather impressed by the level of security that a credit card provides. Unfortunately, my mom, being a chinese woman is all up in arms about this issue. The card was issued under joint names and now she is saying she is going to take it away due to my unsafe usage. The thing that bugs me is that all my purchases online come from the United States and how my card number managed to find its way down to Quebec is somewhat baffling. The most likely explanation would probably be due to someone hacking either my computer network, or that of either a local company where I made a purchase or one of the companies abroad which I shop online from. I guess there is also the potential that it may be due to some individual employee selling card numbers online. -shoot I suppose I'll never really know the answer, but it does make me worry for future purchases, particularly online. I have always shopped from reputable sites and most payments are made via paypal. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident. As to my mom taking my credit card, I suppose i can always just apply for my own Visa or something just under my own name. Its hard to be a baller without credit, yo. :sp_ike_d: Has anyone else ever had an experience of this sort?
Lol.... thank lord it never happened to me.... but ive heard it from friends... some ppl were booking multiple trips to middle eastern countries but yea... it was cuz she ordered concert tickets with her CC n the website got hacked or something i dunno just apply one ur own if ur mum is being difficult... then she wont have anything to say abt it id never have a joint account with parents..... >_<
wtf..now it worries me once again -___________- Dear God, please bless my mom's credit card from being use like the OP. I used it too often that hopefully people don't hack my paypal account. I'm poor & I need money for college. Amen.
^ knock on wood.. me neither, luckily... credit card security has really pumped up over the pass few years.
I'd rather not use a debit card for online purchases. I doubt security on a debit card is anywhere near the level of a credit card.
Same thing happened to me once. Some moron was dumb enough to charge my card for web hosting service. Needless to say, I contact the company, got his IP, and reported his ass.
LOL omg that guy is a dumbass hahahaa Never happened to me... I use a debit card (& through paypal) and my mom keeps nagging me about not using it so much for online purchases because she claims said she knows a lot of people who got their debit cards used (she works at a bank as a teller so they tell her these things for some reason whether it is about the bank she works at or not LOL) She wanted to get a joint credit card with me but I was like, why botherrrr??? lol I'd rather use my pretty Hello Kitty debit card I asked and they said get around the same amount of credit if I am cosigned w/ her anyway.
is not hard to get the card number esp when you make purcahses online; since when you purchase online, you need cc number, expiry date, and the 3-digit in the back; therefore they just have to replicate is; even if you pay your gas with your cc, they just swipe it with a handheld size managtic strip reader, they put into the computer and have all the cc numbers in no time; with no credit for yourself, most banks with Visa would approve your application with starting credit of $500 (that is when you have no credit); however since you are using your mom's joint account, you will start to have some i think; also if you own a cell phone, you know they check your credit score/standing before allowing you to sign a contract? if you and other PA members didn't know, your own unique SIN or ID number gives the credit company all the information from what magazine subscriptions you have, what sort of utility bills you have, any bill bills, credit card you hold and each an every thing you do with your credit card (like credit limit, on time payments, late payments, account standing, etc) what bank of credit are you using? because each company will have a team of anti-theft that will check your transactions and buying habits; if you suddently bought large purchase and out of nowhere, they should have caught it right away; for example, my friend who owns a petro-canada card for purchasing gas ONLY; with that card, his history is 3 years of the same gas station location, one day his card has other purchases from somewhere locally but once he called and they look up the buying habits, they are willing reverse the transactions and give him a new card with a new number; so there is NOTHING to panic about, they [credit card companies] are trained to look for these things; if you work in a similar environment, you will see these kind of frauds every single day guaranteeed;
Spy/Malware? I order a crapload of things online with my CC, but I haven't been jerked so far. I did have my debit card stolen at one point ($220 was withdrawn), but I caught the transaction, called my bank, and the money was credited back to my account. Bank of America FTW.
Just get a bank card. Its pretty much the same as a credit card minus the credit. It takes money directly out of your account so you only spend what you have. I don't even touch credit cards. Don't have one. Don't like the thought of borrowing money.
try paying your tuition with your debit card -sweat also the good about credit card is they build your credit, and those help you with having a loan for a property purchase, leasing a car, etc; with no credit what-so-ever, all i can say to you is "good-luck" with a cc, when you pay $2k per semester for example, you can get a return of 1-2% back in cash or whatever the reward is, think of $2k per semester x 2 per year x 4 years, thats a saving of $320 plus savings from buying your gas, paying bills, etc cc is not about borrowing money, you pay a whooping 20% interest rate by "borrowing" via your credit card, a smarter people wouldn't even go this direction; i have 26 credit cards on hand, 9 active and how you use it depends on you; don't let the credit cards control you, period -cool2
yes i agree with noasian, yes it can be a fuel for overspending but if ur careful with money and can control urself a credit card is very useful as u pay at the end of the month giving urself more time to pay for an item. furthermore, some credit cards even give u cashback or points so u gain more for using the cards than just cash or a debit card. also a credit card has more protection than one of a debit card as u pay at the end of the month, if fraud occurs like with fearless they usually will notice it unlike with a debit card and u don't have to pay for it whereas u don't get this sort of protection with a debit card as the money is transferred out of ur account straight away.
I have week ago when my debit card got hack. I didn't know what is what when the email of "bank of america" mailed me a letter saying that there was an "irregular transaction". I check my account the instant I finish reading the BOLD words. Albeit I haven't be using my debit card in a while.
