Stephen Fung’s (馮德倫) Tai Chi <太極> film franchise is the most expensive Chinese speaking kung fu movie produced. After last month’s successful release of Tai Chi Zero <太極1從零開始>, the second installment, Tai Chi Hero <太極2英雄崛起> in 3D, will be in theaters on October 25.

The Tai Chi film series combine innovative elements such as fusion Kung fu, hi-tech villains with giant robots, western steampunk elements, a non-traditional martial arts hero, and a superb cast. The upcoming Tai Chi Hero continues the martial arts journey of Yuan Xiaochao (袁晓超) from the first movie. Starring in the sequel will also be Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), William Feng (馮紹峰), Angelababy, Tony Leung (梁家輝) and veteran actor Patrick Tse (謝賢) to anchor the movie.

In the movie, the usually cool and charming Daniel Wu changes his usual image and becomes a mysterious monk. Daniel’s plays a bald headed monk, dressed in plain and worn clothing. His face is covered with exaggerated scars and scabs. He is wrinkled all over, has a sloppy and unshaven beard, and wears a depressed look on his face.

To ensure he portrayed the mysterious kung fu master successfully, Daniel was not afraid to have a hideous image. To get the best effect, hours were spent on the makeup. He said, “My character is cool looking, and no one will forget him. This will give me a chance to attract viewers’ attention and make them watch how I act and perform.”

Tai Chi destroys the Lion Roar Attack

In Tai Chi Hero, Daniel’s character is mysterious and unpredictable – he shows up and leaves without a trace. His actions are anything but logical. Throughout the film, he provokes the character who was kind enough to take him in. Even to a point of challenging him with fights, and he is continuously causing trouble. However, as the movie progresses, he starts explaining the truth behind his actions, and tells the story of how his life/fate was transformed.

Tai-Chi-Hero-Daniel-Wu-Patrick-Tse.jpg In the movie, veteran actor Patrick Tse also portrays a mysterious martial arts guru. As a kind-hearted and peaceful person, Patrick hides in a mountain to train his apprentices, but nevertheless attracts the attention of the martial arts world. He accidentally runs into Daniel, and one thing leads to another. The confrontation evolves into a great fighting duel. Patrick was agile, and using Tai Chi to avoid Daniel’s attack: every single move shows his kung fu expertise. Daniel uses his “Lion Roar” attack, displaying his strong internal force.

Tai Chi Hero’s fight scenes are exciting displays of art and choreography that intensify the story line.

Acting on the same stage as Patrick Tse, Daniel Wu’s performance deserves praise. In the movie, the two perform an excellent fight scene together. Outside the movie, Daniel appeared to be deeply inspired by Patrick as a veteran actor.
