Discussion in 'Science, Technology & Car Chat' started by master_g, Jul 18, 2009.

  1. Ok i got a dumb HD, im not gona get into it cus its gona annoy me , the only reason it hasnt been acquainted with my wall is cus im gona flame alienware when i call them tomorrow or monday.

    Its not being recognised by my comp at all, its not showing up in the BIOS even. ive reinstalled Win7 on my other drive, and the dumb one still is not recognised but when i connect it, it is spining inside so is not dead.

    is there anyway to fix it, actually im sending that crap back regardless but i want my stuff that is on it so i just need to get it to work for a bit?

    You're going to need to go into more detail.

    Is this an old drive or a new drive?
    How old is it?
    Does it work on any other machines?

  3. Its new drive, 500gigs, Seagate barracuda, i had one before and it broke down so i got it swapped for another and its broken down it seems. not even 1 yesrs old

    ive not tried it on another machine though.

    when the first broke down i bought a second hand HD from the shop while the other one was sent to alienware, that one is still going strong...... i duno why they are trying to sell crap HD's

  4. haaa ive forgotten what ive actualy lost on that dum hard drive, wutever, im gona buy a HD myself, forget that crap they send me, not even sure if im gona bother putting it in my pc if its the same model

    see if your hdd is the 7200.11 version as there are known issues with the firmware (as it doesn't get detected), so try to find out your hard drive model and search on seagate's knowledgebase;

    also spinning doesn't mean anything, it only means that there is power to it, and maybe is your data cable become faulty, try to replace that; you can also move the hd into an external enclosure and see if windows detects it;

  6. ^Yeah its 7200.11 ill check it out on the site, but it was working fine then it stops..

    i have 2 HDs so i swapped the cables over for both drives and its the dumb one that doesnt work on both cables. i thought about the external method but i dont have one of them enclosures, i think i may get one though.

    thanks

    ok i looked it up, put the new firmware on and it doesnt work still, it cant even detect the Hd to apply it anyway, it only dtects my other HD's.

    im gona get a WD caviar black, seagte 7200.11 series is messup up, plus im gona get my seagte replaced so im gona try an push for a different model.

    I assume you also used different SATA ports on your board since you already tried diff cables

    I dont think there is much left to do, apart from try it in another comp/enclosure. otherwise its RMA it and loose all your data

    could try the freezer trick?

  8. ^ lol i know the freezer trick but it IS a firmware issue rather than a dying HDD. yup im gona have to send it back, im gona b screaming down the phone if they try and send me another 7200.11. im just gona avoid seagate.

    Because ive put my stuff on my external drives in the past to change operating systems i was able to get most of my stuff back through data recovery on my external drives, so thats not really a problem now.

    ask for the 7200.12 as this is the current product line; there aren't any issues with this; i currently own 2x 7200.11 SGs and they are alright right now; i would suggest you get a enclosure and make the hd external before sending it back; sometimes the computer can't see but external can =)

  10. ^ aww it costs money >.<, ill take a look for one, thank you

    can you reccomend some models, im not sure what to look for but i am sure i need a 3.5" case or whatever that means

  12. ^ lol thats the exact one i was looking at cus i get my stuff from OC, but its out of stock >.<

    yup agreed, seagate aint getting any more of my money

  13. really?, cause last i check ipods use seagate hard drives....-^_^

  14. its just the barracuda 7200.11 models. they messed up the firmware and decided not to tell anyone letting them all lose their data, then they tried to do a ninja release of new firmware when they got exposed and messed that up too.

    the ipod will be fine.

    i will never buy from seagte if i can help it because of how they dealt with this issue, if it comes with my mobile device then i cant do anythig about it. As i sid it was only that particular model though so its more of a principle thing.

    make sure your computer as E-SATA otherwise useless; i use the Antec MX-100 myself as the price isn't too expensive and they come with 3 yr warranty;

    as for the ipods amd other mp3 players, those are NOT 2.5" drives they are most likely the 1.8" and toshiba, seagate etc makes them in that sector; there will be hard drive failures no matter which company you choose to use; seagate is a widely used in terms of servers in many companies, i do own 2x NL series 400GB (server type) hdds and they are running really good, no failure yet, and they are rated to run 1 million MTBF hours where as i think consumer level hdds are rated for 300-400k hours

  16. i ordered the IDE version and had to cancel the order when i realised >.<, i may have to go pcworld and buy it.

    oh i assumed it had USB and esata and was for either IDE or SATA

  18. the one you showed is the correct one, there are two on that site, the one you showed which is out of stock and another one for IDE HDD but they are identicle in looks.

  19. lul i just phoned overclockers to ask why my HDD aint come yet and they said the nubcake covered with failsauce i spoke to yesterday who removed the caddy from my order forgot to take the order off 'hold' so ill have to wait till tomorrow now.
