my sister is thinking of buying a new laptop n have asked me for recommendations, i suggest her the Dell Studio 15 here are the spec:

    intel core 2 duo 2ghz
    3gb ddr2 ram
    320gb HDD
    ATi Mobile HD 3450
    15.4 screen
    in Cool purple colour
    thats £549

you reckon it worth it? ofc there are much cheapers one in ebuyer, acer etc.. but dont really trust them, dell seems trustworthy, plus mainly the studio15 looks really cool in purple rather than in normal dull black one.
p.s she only uses it to surf da net n msn etc.. she dont play online games watsoever, so she need something that will last her a while aleast 2 years

if anyone got any betters one, feel to share ur views

    Bad cause wrong section n00b!!!

but forreal i think you should get less ram if you build it on their site as they overcharge for it, the studio 15 is definitely better than the inspiron though. i would choose the studio 13 or something like that, 15 is too big for travel. but if you want to watch movies and stuff like that you would opt for the new 15.6 inch screens anyways.

also remember to look at the weight and battery time...
I think this laptop is a bit overqualificed for surfing + IM and such

I have a dell laptop. Great bang for your buck, but feels cheap and plastik-y.

Definitelylook at the battery time. Sometimes they say it varies with usage which means it has a fairly low battery time. I bough a Toshiba a few weeks ago, it said battery usage may vary and I ended up only getting 1 hour and 40 min battery time on idle with power saving mode on.

Off-Topic ... uhhh, so which one is the correct section to post these questions ?

We are talking about laptops, so the tech section would be the appropriate forum.

if you wants one with long time and only some surfing and IM then buy a Samsung N10. Maybe a little small (the screen is only 10,2 in) but I heard the battery can easily take 4 hours and 5+ hours during not so heavy work (offcially time 6 hours but the official times are always to "optimisc").
The price is about $400-$450. The only downside is the small screen with may be irritating for some, but the long battery + great mobility (around 2,9 pound/1,3 kg) without the AC adapter

But ... but ... isn't this the Tech & Car section ? ... or was the thread moved from somewhere else and put here ?

It was moved. Also to the OP if you aren't going to be playing any video games like cod4 or anything you can ditch ATI card and just go with the integrated graphics and save money and increase your battery usage.

We have a few Dell Studio 15s at work with similar specs. I haven't heard any complaints as of yet besides Vista... Most of them like the biometric log on. I just tell them to never loose a finger or thumb then :)

I'm sure if you went for a non branded laptop, it would be a lot cheaper?
