After releasing a Mandarin version of her 2011 album, Awakening last year, Hong Kong pop singer Denise Ho (何韻詩) will release her next Mandarin-language album, Coexistence <共存>, next month. The album’s first single, “The Science of Crying” <眼淚教我的事> was released on February 20. Coexistence is Denise’s first album since coming out as a lesbian in front of thousands at the fourth annual LGBT Pride Parade in Hong Kong last November. “The Science of Crying” is composed by Endy Chow (周國賢) with lyrics penned by Wu Tsing Fong (吳青峯), the lead vocalist of Taiwanese indie pop band Sodagreen (蘇打綠). “I immediately got emotional when I heard the song’s demo. This song is definitely a very touching song,” said Fong. “Thus, [Denise and I] came up with [the topic of tears].” There are many physiological components to crying, but shedding tears due to emotional distress is a unique trait of humans, and it is a trait that takes years upon years to learn. “A human body is miraculous,” said Denise. “When we are unhappy, or when we are hurt, we will try to hide these feelings by attempts of forgetting and disposing, but our body has already recorded these feelings deep inside. Our tears will be crying inside our bodies, and slowly, these tears will form a mountain of ice.” The Science of Crying (Audio)
