I don't know of any standalone player that does rm or rmvb.

I have the philips 642, it is pretty good. Can read many types of media, but it's old now and I'm sure there will be some near future divx certified players that can do even better.

On the philips, the divx (supports srt only) subtitle must be set before the movie to view, can't turn on and off during the movie :(. Very simple to region free hack :). Doesn't read all divx formats :( Optical, RCA, Progressive Component Video Outs :)

It can be bought for $50-60, so if that's chump change to you, I'd go for it.

most dvd players now support divx
just look through the sunday paper ads in like best buy or something
it'll say like dvd progressive scan or something
and im guessing if it's above $50, it'll read divx

I would have to agree on the DVP642. Just make sure when you get one it says DVP642/37 on the box or at least /17 after it. It has newer firmware on it. I haven't had a single Xvid/Divx it couldn't handle. It cannot handle .OGG or Matroksy (sp?). My DVP642/37 actually handles .SRT, .SMI, and .SUB (sub 1.0 and 2.0)

It will also play .Dat files that are typically on VCD/SVCDs. It is a cheap player. It has handled DVD-R/+R/+RW. Most of all it has a HUGE user base. So you wont be alone with questions.

Other than that player, I have heard the recent Toshiba player with HDMI upscaling is great and handles a few more items with some newer tech on it. I believe it is model SD-4980.

Good luck. And any questions on the DVP....PM me.

    yeah.. i recently got a lite-on
    it's a dvdr recorder i believe it's called
basically copies what's on tv onto a dvd disc.
it's also a dvd player and it reads divx. i've been watching some PA movies on it as well as some anime. works really well

The philips dvd 642 is a good player. I have it to play some dramas I download and it plays all of them perfectly. If your in the states you could get one from Circuit City for like 50 bucks.

If you want a more updated version you could get the Philips DVD Player with HDMI (DVP5960) which is like 70 bucks. Haven't used it but should be better because it has a HDMI connections.

I got the cyberhome 401 at home. It's cheap, small and can play divx. It's not a well known brand but I think it's very good.
