How many of you guys do community service? And what type of services do you do, or would recommend? I need a couple hundred hours as a college requirement and I'm thinking about voluntering at the hospital, but I heard it's really hard to get in so I'm still pondering over it. What are some other good places to volunteer at that look good on your transcript?
Junior year in high school, my friends & I volunteered as counselors at a science camp for 4-5th graders. It was a 3 days & 4 nights type of thing, and I ended up getting 100 hours for just baby-sitting the kids, basically. Senior year in high school, I volunteered @ a hospital. Depending on what position you want to take (desk work, maturnity center, child development ect.), it can be quite competitive as hospitals are first options for many students. Plus it does look good on your college transcript provided that you want to major in something related to the medical field. Anyway, when I volunteered, I was required to write a 200 worded essay on why I wanted to volunteer and how they would benefit from accepting me. I also had to get 2 letters of recommendations, and had to sit through a 30 minute interview along with my parents. But that's how it is with most hospitals. I didn't think it was that bad. Right now, I'm volunteering @ a habitat for humanity. They build houses and sell them at a deep discount so that those who are in need have a better place to live. I also teach little kids math every friday, and donate blood every 3-4 months...I think that counts as a way of volunteering? Prior to this, I volunteered for this 'Asian Citizenship' thing, where I helped asian immigrants apply for their citizenships. It was quite fun...
Yes, I do 'volunteer work'. That is looking after our 'khai cai's' over the holidays. They are a right bunch of kids...It's great because they keep me mentally challenged by the questions they ask and also test my patience most of the times.Great relief after they are put to bed!
during high school to beef up my resume. Typical ones are hospitals, nursing homes, tutoring, hell some even did the local library.
Yeah...I was thinking about tutoring little kids, but I'm afraid I can't handle a whole bunch of little kids running around. I'm not a very patient person <_<. Woah! Shy, that's a lot of work to just get into a hospital?! I didn't think it'd be that serious. Do you have to get shots or anything of the sort before getting accepted? I think I might just go for the local library lol!
you think the process for volunteering at a hospital is tough, just wait until you start looking for summer internships.
A few weeks ago, I volunteered to help clean up the community around the school. My class picked up garbage and raked leaves for the neighborhood.
Right now I volunteer at a nursing home. It's alright except the old ppl there can be a bit freaky sometimes. I remember when I first started working there, thsi old lady in a wheel chair rolled up in front of me and whispered "Get out while you still can!" and then rolled away. I was pretty spooked out for the rest of the evening! lol
hrmm I volunteered @ Ontario Science Centre back in gr10 for their summer camp program. It was damn fun, all we would do is walk around the exibits early in the morning before it's opened to the public, then do some arts and crafts. Although chillin' and supervising the gr7/8 kids was a lot more fun and relaxing than those litto gr1 - gr4's
lol, but if you do something for money, then that doesn't count as ''volunteering"! Haha... So why do you guys do volunteer work? It seems that most ppl only do it so that it'd count towards going to college.
volunteering beefs up any resume. alot of employers and bosses really look at the volunteering section of ur resume. They want to see how u can help the community and/or what you are doing on your spare time that benefits others
I am a member of Americorps and I volunteer at a retirement home as a tutor coordinator for the senior learners. My service is 12 hours a week and a total of 450 hours for a year. Last week i volunteer at a high school and set up an event for the community. It was a health education event. 3 weeks ago i helped paint a mural at a local community center. I wont consider myself as altruistic or anything cuz i do get a small pay check and an annual stipend. Basically the University pays me a small amount to help out in the community. Is it worth it? Sure it is cuz Im getting paid eventhough its not a lot and my service is fullfilling. One more thing is that volunteers are the most positive and nicest group of people you will ever meet.
I volunteer because there are lots of kids and impoverished families that deserve a better living environment.
My cousin ia also looking into doing an IT internship this summer. Any comments of how these internship interviews are like? She doesn't have any working experience, so she's not sure what they are looking for any internees at Lockheed or any other corp.
Tell her to check out her school's office of career development. They have the latest internship postings. They'll also help you out with your resume. Getting an internship is a very good idea; if you do well as an intern, you will most likely be invited back to work there full time. Lockheed as well as other big corporations always look for summer interns. Check out their websites and submit an application through that. Most of the time, you will not get called back, because they do on-campus recruiting. Internship interviews are pretty similar to full time job interviews. Behavioral questions (see if you exhibited leadership, communication skills, etc.) are commonly asked since you do not have any work experience... most of the answers that they will look for are answers about school situations.
