Does anyone leave their comp on 24/7?

I was just wondering if anyone leaves there comp on 24/7? Whats the longest you have ever left your comp on without shutting down?

I usually have my comp on <12 a day or maybe sometimes 24 hours to finish a download, but never 24/7 for a long time

I personally dont ... longest is 24hrs as otherwise my electricity bills are gunna be big

but running a laptop 24/7 is just not a good idea, they're not designed to be run continously. Most don't have adequate cooling, and they're much more fragile than standard computers.

there are both arguements for the issue ..... (This is from several sites that i found) believe what u wnt

    Leave it on:

The electronic components within the computer tend to last longer if they aren't constantly cooling off and warming back up. Additionally, you don't get any kind of initial "spike" in power when your machine is first turned on (not a big problem if you have an ATX type motherboard—most newer computers do). Finally, it's much more convenient to just plop down in front of your computer and start working than to sit through a lengthy boot-up.

A computer that's on 24/7 is actually at slightly LESS (exactly HOW MUCH less is a subject still being debated among the experts) risk of failure since it isn't experiencing the jolt of power at startup time, and isn't having to start the drives spinning. Spinning up from dead stop is the most stressful time in a hard drive's life - depending on the specific drive, the power required to spin up from a cold start can be as much as *100 times* (that's a worst-case situation - Usually it's closer to 3-5 times) what is required to keep it spinning while idle! The sudden draw on the power supply to handle that can cause failure of the system all by itself.

    Turn it off:

Your hard drive may last longer, especially if your computer doesn't put the drive on "standby" after a certain amount of idle time. The constant spinning of your hard drive motor can wear out the internal bearings. I personally don't think this a big deal. Newer hard drives will probably be in good service longer than the computer they live inand also potential of power surges damage

Software-wise, there are a lot of advantages to turning it off. Some programs develop "memory leaks" where they set aside a block of memory every time they start, and sometimes forget to release it when they're done. Rebooting your machine clears out memory leaks. Also, if you have automatic updating set on your PC, many updates are not fully applied until after a reboot. New updates are prevented from being loaded until the last one has completed being installed (machine rebooted). There is also the vulnerability issue that Wounded Duck stated, but if you have a good firewall in place and the proper antivirus software, you should be OK.

If connected to the internet - potential of hackers unless good software potential

Another "turn it off" argument is that you'll save on your electric bill. Depending on your machine, it uses the same power as one or more 100 watt light bulbs if a server its a different story but we are dealing with home computers

Finally, you're going to pull more dust into your computer if it's running all the time. More dust = more heat. More heat = short lived computers, unless you clean it out regularly.

This issue is still up for debate with different opinions

the most I've ever left my computer on was like 3 days. And that was because I was downloading a 10 GB file, and I wanted it really bad

Longest I left my comp on is probably around 5 days. People that leave it on 24/7 restart their comps every few days anyway, so its really no big deal (except the electical bill)...well I hope they do..

wow knoc your bills must be through the roof lol

anyways thanks drag for that very interesting reply, will take it into mind. ATM it is way too hot to leave my comp on, ambient temps are up 10C compared to winter and I just cant bear any extra heat in my room, especially since Uk has never heard of air con except in cars -^_^

Oh yeh Nirvania thats a nice setup, if only we could all afford one like it -whistle
