Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One, prequel to 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, smashed the opening day box office with $71 million USD last Friday, becoming the 12th highest-grossing opening day of all time. It is the third highest-grossing opening of the year, after the $81 million USD gross from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and $75 million USD from Captain America: Civil War. The space opera, however, did not surpass the grosses of its predecessor Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was released last December. The Force Awakens grossed $119 million USD on opening day, the highest opening day in history. Rogue One stars Felicity Jones as Jyn, a rogue maverick who, along with a team of rebels, try to steal the plans of the Death Star. The events in the film take place shortly before the opening sequences of A New Hope. Hong Kong martial arts actor Donnie Yen (甄子丹) stars in Rogue One as Chirrut Imwe, a blind warrior who believes in the Force. Chinese veteran actor Jiang Wen (姜文) stars as his partner Baze Malbus, a mercenary. A few days ago, Donnie and his family were spotted at a Japanese restaurant owned by former TVB actor Joe Ma (買的中). Joe and his family were also present, and the two ate together. Joe’s wife Karen Cheung (張筱蘭) shared her encounter on social media, adding that her son was very happy to be able to meet his idol. Rogue One is Donnie’s highest-grossing film. With XXX: Return of Xander Cage coming in January, the Ip Man <葉問> actor is on his way to take down Hollywood. XXX: Return of Xander Cage is the third part of the XXX series starring Vin Diesel. Donnie, playing the villain Xiang, costars in the film alongside Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone. Thai martial arts actor Tony Jaa and Journey to the West 2 <西遊伏妖篇> actor Kris Wu (吳亦凡) play supporting roles in the film. Creds: Oriental Daily
have yet to see it, should probably find the time to see it, my co-workers all loved Donnie Yen without knowing who he is
me four.....everyone is really hyped up about it...... I'm sure the action will be really good though.
When you are in a Star Wars film, the box office is going to be good no matter if the film is good or not - it doesn't really matter who stars. But congrats to Donnie for landing this role!
Hopefully can see it next Monday, was waiting for all the fandoms to see it first since most of the theaters here sold out.
