The reason the mayans didnt need leap years is because they calculated their day according to the stars positioning in the sky. This leap year is a Gregorian Calender thing which is based off a 24 hour/day calculation that is off by a quarter of a day every Gregorian year. So to re-cap, the Mayan calender is far more accurate than when the Gregorian Calender came around.
