Given that the Academy awards is a popularity contest a la high school style (despite its claim for awarding base on merit), I am not surprised at all that the intense dramas wouldn't be very well received.

Really, we hear about war all over day in and day out, films like Rendition, which rubs the cruelty and less pleasant side of a paranoid government into everyone's face. Of course it wouldn't go down well.

But none of those films have been very good so far. But it looks like things are starting to pick up. With the releases of Eastern Promises, Gone Baby Gone (big surprise to me that it did so well), Micheal Clayton, and American Gangster. All of which are on my watch list :)

I will wait for Michael Clayton on DVD (or download :p) and in my opinion, Eastern Promises wasn't as good as History of Violence.

Not sure about Gone Baby Gone, but I didn't like the trailer of American Gangster, so I doubt I will see either of them in the cinemas...
