Tuesday June 17, 2008 Hong Kong Animated film Kung Fu Panda has pulled in another box office hit for DreamWorks Animation in the run up to the summer holidays and the Cantonese dubbed version will be featuring the voice talents of some of Hong Kong's greatest stars, including Eason Chan (陳奕迅), Jaycee Chan (房祖名), Sam Lee (李璨琛), Denise Ho (何韻詩) and Josie Ho (何超儀). International megastar Jackie Chan (成龍) also provided the Chinese voice for his wise monkey role in the original. The cast recorded their parts in a studio earlier, surrounded by props featuring the film's protagonist - a Kung Fu loving panda named Po. From the many expressions on display during recording, they proved that voice acting can be just as animated as shooting for a regular film. Eason is becoming quite a veteran at providing cartoon voices now and injected much humour and personality into the lines for his role as Po. He had also suggested for good friend Sam to be cast into the role of the Mantis, laughing that Sam's face bears great resemblance to that of the mantis character. Taking time out afterwards to watch the results of the recording, Eason laughed that Denise's role was extremely cold-hearted, saying that in the scene where her character of the Tigress tells Po that he is not cut out for Kung Fu, it is so harsh that it makes everyone feel extremely sad. After her session, Josie said that she was having so much fun she wanted to take on the voices for a few more characters! With the martial arts theme of the film, Jackie was the perfect choice for a role and he explained that he had been a good friend of DreamWorks executive Jeffrey Katzenburg for a long time, so when the company set out on the five year project to make this film, a part had been reserved with Jackie's name on it. Jackie added that the producers had originally asked him to provide the voice of Monkey for all of the different language versions of the film, but after some thought, Jackie had declined the offer due to other work commitments, agreeing only to provide the English, Cantonese and Mandarin versions. This is also the first time that Jackie has worked with his son Jaycee on an animation project. Kung Fu Panda is currently on general release worldwide after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. credits: batgwa.
