Eason Chan Talks Candidly about Family, Competition, and Bad Habits Will Only Listen To Himself; Feels Guilty For Not Spending Time With Daughter For the past half a year, there have been numerous reports on Eason Chan having a bad relationship with his manager Katie Chan Ka Ying. At the same time, their contract will expire at the end of the year, and rumors are going around that Eason will be signing with another managment company. Eason: Honestly, I am a person who does not know how manage myself. When it comes to managing my finances, I am worst at that. Which is why I need a manager to take care of those things and Katie Chan has helped me take care of those problems, even caring about my mood changes. So I don't understand how these rumors came about, my relationship with Katie Chan has been a happy and understanding one. It can be said that Eason's career has been managed by his father, they've even argued because of career related issues. Ever since signing with Katie Chan, his father has slowly stepped away from managing his career. It is now said that his wife, Hilary Tsui, is helping him manage his career. But as a person gets older, there will come a time where he/she wants to manage his own life and career. Eason: I've always listened to others in the past, I've listened to my father at one point and I've listened to my wife at another, but now I'm only listening to myself, in a way trying to challenge myself. Frankly, my wife has to take care of our daughter and she doesn't have much time for anything else, I don't want her to have to worry about too much. Because of work I am always busy, most of the time I don't have to play with my daughter, and I feel guilty about that. Turns Sensitive When Father Is Mentioned Eason's father once said, I've experienced being in prison and there is nothing for me to be scared about, the only thing I'm worried about is ruining the image of my son. As a caring son, regarding his father's experience [the trial and imprisonment], Eason's heart aches and a long time was needed for Eason to accept the reality. He doesn't want any [further] negative reports to hurt his father. Which is why Eason turns especially sensitive when his father is mentioned in any interview. Eason: I will not answer any questions regarding my father. My father is well, thank you for your concern. Eason is regualrly visiting his father [in prison], and spending time talking to him. As a son, Eason cannot be by his father's side all the time, so when it comes to his father's health he is extremely worried. Will Only Compete With Himself; Happiest When Fans Purchase Albums When talking about 2006's HK music awards, one can say that Eason has been very successful. He has won either the Favorite or Best Male Singer Award at all 4 major stations, proving his status in the HK music industry. Eason: First I want to say, I will not regard any singer as a competitor, I will only compete with myself, I don't want negative rumors. I am most happy when I am holding a mic on stage singing, there is nothing to worry about and I am focusing on singing only. Awards are a form of encouragment for me, but when the issue of being satisfied arises, satisfaction comes from fans using money to purchase my albums. Albums sales have declined, internet downloading is becoming easier, do you think it is easy to get fans to purchase an album? Eason: Now that the music award ceremonies have ended and negative rumors have settled, thinking back on the awards and winning the Male Singer Award at all 4 stations, I am happy. Especially winning TVB's Favorite Male Singer, in the past it has always been the Four Heavenly Kings sharing the award, then it was Hacken. I really didn't expect to win this year, even though when I released the album "Shall We Talk, Shall We Dance?," there have been people telling me, "You should've won that award," but for the past couple of years it hasn't been me. People all around have been saying it should've been me, it was really annoying. I've finally won it this year and I could breath in relief, at least I won't hear those annoying "you should've won it" sayings anymore. Changed His View of Andy Lau After the awards ended, Eason changed his views on Andy Lau. Every singer should learn from Andy Lau's professionalism. Eason: In the past, Andy Lau did not sing live. If you paid close attention, you would've notice that every time he sung live his hands would shake. But this year, I saw that he got rid of that habit and no longer needs to have ear plugs. He has gained confidence on stage, and I admire him for overcoming obstacles. Right now, singers from outside of HK are gaining success in the HK market. Everyone, people in front to people behind the scenes are to blame. If everyone takes music seriously and produces good songs, if singers put effort into singing those songs, if DJ's support those songs, if the media focuses less on negative rumors, the HK industry can possibly be saved. Trying to Kick Bad Habits Everytime reporters pester Eason's family or if they ask him questions about his family, Eason's temper will change for the worse. Has Eason seeked help from a psychiatrist? Eason: I have a friend who is a psychiatrist and I've asked him if I have a psychiatric problem. He says no, it is just a habit of my moods changing drastically, and it is not a psychiatric problem. He tells me no to worry and slowly control my EQ. I have been trying hard to do so, if I am having a bad day I will inform my company and if possible avoid going to events where there are many reporters. In 2007, aside from trying to control his bad temper and mood changes, Eason is trying to kick the bad habit of being late. Eason: Actually, since last year I've been trying to change the bad habit of being late, but it hasn't been successful. Because of being late, my managment company has reprimanded me many times, and I know that being late annoys people.
