Hot gadget: The Apple iPhone has had considerable success worldwide - but there are reports of some models 'exploding'

The EU is investigating reports of exploding iPhones and iPods, it was reported last night. There are reports of iPods allegedly exploding or catching fire in Britain, France, Holland and Sweden.Earlier this month an iPod Touch belonging to Ellie Stanborough, an 11-year-old girl from Liverpool, apparently blew up.

Her father complained at the time that he dropped the music player after it over-heated. 'It made a hissing noise,' he said. 'I could feel it getting hotter in my hand and I thought I could see vapour.'

He threw the music player out of his back door and 'within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air'.He later accused the manufacturers Apple of trying to buy the family's silence when they refused to pay compensation until he signed a 'gagging' order. Last week Romain Kolega, a French teenager, claimed he was injured when his girlfriend's iPhone exploded into shards after beginning to 'crackle and pop like a deep-fryer'.

Mr Kolega, 18, said: 'I felt something like a grain of sand in my eye. It must have been a shard of glass.'In July, a man in Holland reported that his iPhone had exploded. He said he had left his iPhone in his car for 15 minutes only to return to find that it had caught fire and severely damaged the passenger seat of his vehicle. An exploding iPod may also have been responsible for a Swedish fire two months ago when a Saab car was engulfed in flames, almost incinerating the owner's dog.

'We have asked Apple to share with us any information they might have because of press reports of problems relating to iPhones and iPods,' a European Commission official said.

The Commission has sent out an alert to the EU's 27 member states asking for any details or further incidents involving iPods or iPhones. Apple are aware of the incidents but is understood to believe there are no safety problems with the 200 million iPods and 26 million iPhones sold in Europe.Commissionspokeswoman Helen Kearns said: 'Apple have come back to us and what they've said to us is that they consider these are isolated incidents. They don't consider that there's a general problem.

'They're trying to get more information on the specific details of those incidents and they will do tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause,' she said.
A spokesman for Apple Europe said: 'We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add.'The mobile phone carrier O2, which has exclusive rights for iPhone in the UK, said: spokeswoman said: 'We have not seen any reported cases from our customers but we will continue to monitor the situation closely.'

An American TV station said it had evidence of 15 'burn and fire-related incidents', said to be caused by the gadget's lithium ion batteries.
But it said Apple's lawyers had tried to keep the information confidential.

Shouldn't let these electronics get heated, the batteries get hot enough, it can blow so we have to be cautious. But the glass screen exploding is crazy.
