Hey everyone, I know most of you on this forum are Cantonese Chinese, and I know there are a significant amount of you who are seeking to improve upon your Cantonese (as I am doing right now since I am ABC). Well, I have some really good online resources I would like to recommend for those of you who are currently learning right now. These are also helpful for those of you who are learning to read and write Chinese as well. I've been using these resources for over 6 months and I've definitely improved with speaking, reading, and writing as they've been a great help. http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/ This site is UK based, but this resource can be used universally since the Cantonese dialect is the same throughout. It includes an online dictionary, a forum, some learning resources, and a character translation program - all the links of which you'll find below. http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/scripts/wordlist.htm This is the CantoDict feature, which is similar to a dictionary in which you can type English to retrieve Chinese words (including formal Chinese words and Cantonese colloquialism), and besides giving you the characters and their meanings, they also include the pronunciations in both Cantonese and Mandarin. You can also type in Chinese characters to get their English meanings, (or even pronunciations in Cantonese to get the meanings!). Just click the link to explore all the features of CantoDict. http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/dictionary/parser/ This is called the Chinese Word Parser (a.k.a. the Chinese translation program). All you simply have to do is to copy and paste Chinese characters to get their English meanings and the Cantonese and Mandarin pronounciations. (All pronunciations are based on the Jyutping (粵拼) romanization format, which you will eventually have to familiarize yourself with if you constantly use the Cantodict and Word Parser features.) I find this to be an extremely useful feature to learn new characters. http://home.comcast.net/~jbmbweb/cantoinput/index.html This is a program for the Cantonese input method which supports both the Yale and Jyutping romanization systems (there is a Mandarin pinyin mode as well). The program is Java based and should run on any OS with a Java runtime environment. Useful for writing in Chinese on the computer, especially if you prefer to use Cantonese romanization over Mandarin. If you are serious about learning Cantonese, these are my highly recommended resources that will surely help you, in addition to routine practice with speaking and listening to Cantonese on a regular basis. Note: Learning the Jyutping romanization to use for these sites/resources may be a major headache at first, but once you get accustomed to it, I guarantee it'll be easy, as it is for me now.
