does a used exhaust lose much of its performance and sound compared to a new one? or it doesn't matter used or new?

depends, in a normal car, as long as no holes, rust, it should be fine. Holes in exhausts = LOUD car

however if your running a high performance car, then a newer internally smoother exhaust will help the gas flow out better. less restriction means more power

but again in a normal car, it wont make much of a difference to performance.

It will better if you buy a new one, you won't have big problem but the sound will take a little bit longer to have a great sound
