So, I'm heading off to uni at the end of the month and I figured it would be practical to bring a HD to backup my laptop in case of anything that could go wrong and for any other types of files I may need to store. I've had a look on the Canadian Newegg and the best one, IMO, I could find is this.

Anyone have any suggestions or feedback on the one I'm looking at? I'm trying to keep the total price under $150.

  2. Do you really need 1TB though, do you want to backup files or make an image of your whole laptop HDD? its WD so youll have no problems though

1tb for $120 is a pretty good deal so i'd say go ahead and purchase it. either way you should do fine with western digitial. if i stumble upon a better deal, i'll be sure to let you know.

Edit: i went over some of the reviews and they seem to be positive. not to mention 482 people reviewed it. go for it (Y)

no that much of a good deal, the WDC Green Edition of 1TB is about $85 plus get an external enclosure from Antec MX-100 for about $25, both items will give you 3 year warranty and is still less than the one you stated for $120 and it gives a lot of warranty VS "according to reviews" there is no power switch, as long as it is pluged in it will be running 24/7 and comes with 1 yr warranty only...

plus i wouldn't be just transferring files over either, i would make a complete image of the laptop every week so that all the files will be the same if the hdd ever crashed

If you are bringing your laptop to Uni wouldnt it be better to buy a portable external?

I am...Isn't the one I posted portable enough? No clue, I usually just add internal HD's if I want more storage, never externals.

lol bringin your whole porn collection to uni or what hahahha... or bt/ut at yo uni perhaps.

  9. some uni trottle bt really badly

and also, jelly, that's a 3.5" hard drive, which most likely means not portable. it will need AC power. you can even see it from the picture....

    look for 2.5"

Oh you mean that, yes I realize it needs AC power.

  11. ncix canada was selling a 250GB WD passport for 79.99... they usually go for like 99.99.... or you can get the 500GB one for 129.99...

    but i haven't seen a 1TB 2.5" around

    This.

The external enclosure will serve 2 purposes.

    1. Turns any internal hard drive into an external one.
    2. Can be used to pull data off a hard drive without having opening your case and installing it.

  14. i just received mine in the mail today lol

    although it's only a 250GB....

it's nice if you want to use as an extended usb thumb drive, but for backing up purposes, i would rather use a server, or at the least, a 3.5" external....

also on an off topic note, my storage server is basically a collection of 250GB hard drives, and by partitioning it in separate physical drives, if one drive fails, you don't lose all your data.. hence is why i don't like buying 1TB hard drives....

    a series of 250gb drives.
each with different data? raid? mirrored?
if one drive fails, data on that drive lost no. not all your data lost, but that drive is gone with the data that was on there.

    To the issue at hand:

I'm going to have to suggest setting this up on your own. You get the separate warranty and cheaper options.
As Noasian suggested, you can go the way of grabbing a WD 3'5 drive and an external enclose (something Vantec perhaps). Should keep your costs well within the $150 limit.
I'm not partial to buying the stock 3'5 external drives from retailers.
As others have suggested also, a 2'5 (perhaps the 2'5 WD passport) will server you well with the added portability.

so its usb powered or wall. if you wanna back up and transfer on the fly 2.5" versions are the way to go also a bit more stylish haha.

    yes WDC has 1TB 2.5" for $280
but protable (2.5") are a lot slower, 5400rpm vs 7200rpm

I'm probably gonna be backing up my laptop every 2 weeks or so. That being said, I'll probly do that in my room so the portability issue and slower data transfer isn't that big a deal.
I might just go with the WD 3.5" and get an enclosure. I'll see after a few weeks of school. I might not really need 1 tb of space. 500 Gb might suffice. But then again...with uni internet I might just go crazy downloading stuff :D lol.
Yeah, they do look a lot more aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll get my HD later in september after a few weeks of school and see how much space I need and if portability will be a big issue or not.
