I wanted to know if it was possible to have the 'My documents' folder (and music/pictures folder) on a separate hard drive from the one my OS is on, it makes things much easier if something happens and i have to reinstall my OS.

But is it possible to have your desktop items (like files, folders, etc) stored on a HDD or partition other than the one the OS is on while actually appearing on the desktop as it would normally?

  3. Indeed... desktop icons should really be shortcut links to the actual file/application found somewhere else on the same or other hard drive...

Ok its all done, so i dont have to back up My doc, music, pics and desktop next time i reinstall my OS.

But is it possible to make win7 like Ubuntu where the OS is separate (or can be) from everything else so i can reinstall it without it effecting anything?

So if i had my OS on the C: drive and i had my programs installed on the E: drive, would i have to reinstall the programs if I formatted the C: drive and reinstalled the OS?

i think some programs are attached to the os? i guess you can put the directory somewhere else but not sure.

You don't have to install to program files.

never done that before lol...but if you reinstalled the os programs like ms office and stuff would definitely have to be reinstalled right? for license purpose etc.

i would have thought people would do that with SSHD because most are to small to put all your software on.

M$ needs to make this an option for win 8... sure it aint gona happen though. well at least all my stuff other than software installs is off the partition with the OS.

ok im having another go on the chapter 9 boss with the bunch of heads all doing fire and crap on me, dude killed me 3 times already, 20 mins per go.

Partition the drive to keep the OS separate from files.
Or,use two hard drives. One for OS and the other for data.

  16. typically... you can install a program where ever you want.... certain programs however require certain files to be installed in the system folder.... but yeah.. things just work better where they should be... regarding re-installation... if you want to learn... learn how to make an image. that way you will only go through one format/install process.... and be back to everything cleanly.

Yeah thats what im doing, made a partition and the same HDD, one for OS and the other for the files.

I found that you can run the windows 7 trial 3 times in a row, im trying to hold off buying and waiting for windows 8.

Because of that, i cant go that route because i have to make a fresh install. in the past when restoring from an image, my programs did not work properly and i had to reinstall them anyway. this was years ago though.

also making an image is ok but its goign to be an old state, im constantly adding to my pc so i need it to be as recent as possible which is why saving things on a separate drive makes more sense for me.

I guess having to reinstall all my programs is not to bad.

Data in another folder yes. But programs gets iffy because of registry things and system files. I didn't know you could do that with Ubuntu, but then again I dont' keep anything on each OS's partitions and keep everything in the data partition.

Probably. I think it has something to do with the registry too. I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure you have done it before. Haven't you ever installed stuff on a usb when trying to fix someones computer?

yea some .exe file definitely and copied photoshop program from someones computer, just the directory files and it still worked lol. But yeah some applications have a unique signature etc or reg values definitely wont run as when you erase the os and boot up a different one it will probably see it as a different computer etc.
