Yesterday, author Guo Jingming (郭敬明), unveiled new character posters for his upcoming directorial debut, Tiny Times <小时代>, beginning the film’s marketing journey with great earnest.

Tiny Times, a film which is adapted from Guo Jingming’s own bestselling novel trilogy, stars Yang Mi (杨幂), Amber Kuo (郭采潔), Bea Hayden (郭碧婷), and Hsieh Yi Lin (謝依霖) as four best friends who get caught in the high living cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. The four girls will get entwined in intriguing relationships with male leads Kai Ko (柯震東), Jiang Chao (姜潮), Chen Xuedong(陈学冬), Rhydian Vaughan (鳳小岳), and Calvin Du (杜天皓), which takes a heavy toll on their friendship.

Although marketed as a youthful idol film, the posters give the film a much darker tone than implied in its earlier marketing stages. The expressionless characters stand quietly side by side, standing against various exquisite backdrops.

Guo explained, “This concept was actually inspired by Yang Mi. Our film photographer unknowingly snapped a picture of Yang Mi standing quietly and expressionlessly during a shoot. It was a powerful picture. A sound of silence is better than a sound of noise. Less can be more, and nothing can be turned into something. I decided to use this filming style for the rest of our character posters, and have the characters stand in front of a background that represents them. I’ll leave the audience to interpret the rest.”

Tiny Times is a joint production between mainland China’s EE-Media, Heli Chenguang International Media, H&R Century Pictures, Beijing Forbidden City Pictures, Enlight Films, Dasheng International Media, and Taiwan’s Star Ritz Productions. Taiwan’s Angie Chai (柴智屏), best known for producing classic idol series s <流星花園> and the critically acclaimed film, You Are the Apple of My Eye <那些年,我們一起追的女孩>, serves as Tiny Times’ producer.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in mainland China on June 27, 2013.
