I posted this on another thread already, but I would like to hear from other people's opinion on this! Has anyone ever thought of this senario before? Suppose the Chinese government was given a choice, to either take Taiwan or Hong Kong back, but can't be both. Which one would you choose if you are the President of China? Remember, you only have two choices: 1) Hong Kong 2)Taiwan and please give you reason(s). Thanks haha Here's my answer: If I was the President of China, I would definitely go for Taiwan in a flash haha! Why? Strategically, its more important, technology wise has more to offer, natural reources & etc..the gain far far out weights Hong Kong's.
There's no need to ask a question within one thread and then ask it again in a new one. You're going to wind up getting disjointed responses all over the place and it makes a discussion hard to follow. -roflyawn *** ADDENDUM ***: Never mind, I see you've deleted the other response; I thank you for streamlining the discussion.
After I posted on the other thread I realized its unique enough to have a separate thread. Ralphrep, you're not to paticipating?
taiwan..because you already have hong kong after the british rule...just had to point that out :sp_ike_d:
Well the discussion is based upon a speculative supposition that wouldn't possibly ever exist in the light of day; ie, the PRC is hardly ever going to be forced to pick one over the other, because insofar as it's concerned, it feels that it has the right to both. Moreover, it already has Hong Kong since 1997. So from that perspective, the matter is rather moot. Not for lack of desire for participation, but when a question is asked in this way (based upon something theoretically impossible), it's going to attract less interest overall. In geopolitics, there are always certain hot button issues that people find compelling, like the future status of Taiwan. However, outside of military game diehards (Grodnards) and perhaps historical revisionists, most contemporary political discussion tends to steer away from what is regarded as meaningless "what ifs" if it has no possible implication for the future. As an example of this, we could perhaps sit here and contemplate what kind of world China would be like today had Wen Chi-mei* been barren. *Wen Chi-mei (Seventh sister Wen; ie the seventh girl borne of the Wen clan; otherwise she did not have a real name) was the devout Buddhist peasant woman that bore Mao.
Taiwan obviously..they are unparalleled comparison. One is basically an asset, one is like a liability.
