Gigi Lai made a surprise announcement to retire from the entertainment industry at the end of the "Scoop" programme. The programme was a special edition to promote the first day airing of "The Gem Of Life". Gigi said the series will be her last TV performance and "Sccop" will be her last formal appearance. She thanked all the crew members who had worked with her and she also thanked TVB for giving her the support for the last 20 years. She was trying to hold back tears. Bowie said it was a pity. He asked her to consider carefully. When Gigi was talking to the reporter, Ada was by her side giving her support. Gigi was in flood of tears. She stressed that she is not getting married. Even though she is leaving the entertainment circle, she is forever a TVB artist. She is not too worried about her contract with TVB. When she was filming "The Gem Of Life", she had already thought about quitting. But then, her brother had that nasty accident. She had a lot to take care of. She has the responsibility to finish the series and the promotion. She had hanged on till now. Gigi revealed "I entered the entertainment circle when I was 15. I am nearly 40 (37). All these years I have been singing and acting, in movie or on TV. I was not aiming to get into Hollywood. I am satisfied for what I have achieved. I would like to go back to school to study, look after my family and the business. There are so many things I can do in life." Asked if she would regret leaving the showbiz, Gigi said she is happy for what she got. She thanked the production team, in particular the cast for "The Gem Of Life". Ada told reporter that she only just found out about Gigi's retirement. She felt very sad but she respects her decision. Louse Lee praised Gigi for being able to look after her family in her busy schedule and nobody wants her to leave. i can't believe she has been in the showbiz for so long already. honestly, i haven't seen much of her at all. only fairly recently, that i seen a few of her drama series from tvb.
