Toxic Shock Syndrome associated with tampon use has been a well documented medical entity for greater than 30 years now. Menstruating women who employ such feminine hygiene adjuncts should always bear in mind that any onset of sudden fever as they use these products may be the harbinger or a potentially fatal infection. If so noted, they should remove the tampon and seek medical evaluation immediately (outcomes for patients who retain the tampon longer in place are clinically poorer). Depends on the person. I have a friend who doesn't use tampons cause she's prone to getting blood clots, so tampons are a definite no no. I wouldn't be surprised if this girl is the same.
