I am not surprised, but I shy away from the film since it opens a can of worms that I don't want to face. Realistic, for sure, but certainly unpleasant too.

It's not even "right of a person". Cases such as detailed in Rendition is a manifestation of "Guilty until proven innocent (which is never)". It's worst possible because it PRETENDS to be "democratic" and "liberal".
